Mexican Restaurant

Any suggestions for a great Mexican place on the West Side @ 54th Street?

My advice - follow LeahBaila's suggestions. In particular, her Mexican restaurant suggestions are right on.

Hell's Kitchen (unaffiliated with the TV Show) is also in the area that you're looking.

I'm considering Hell's Kitchen for tonight - how is it? Worth going to?

We like it, and have eaten there several times. I particularly like the grilled shrimp main and the huitlacoche tamale or plantain gordita app; also have had some very good specials - one a lamb shank, and the other a red pozole.

Atmosphere is casual, service is fine. It does get a bit noisy, but not to the point of irritation. Definitely recommend you give it a try.

Did you end up at HK? If so, how did you like it?

I ended up going somewhere else for a lighter dinner - I will be trying it soon though!

          Specifically ON 54th St?
          Around 54th there's:
El Centro (on 54th and 9th)
Tulcingo del Valle (47th and 10th)
Toloache (50th btw 8th and Bwy)

              Toloache is great!

I personally did not like El Centro...my food looked butchered. And I've never been to Tulcingo

Ya, of the three, I'd choose Toloache for something more "upscale" and Tulcingo for solid food in a super-casual setting. El Centro is fine, but I find the other 2 superior.

Tulcingo is by far the most authentic I have been able to find in the city. I say this from the perspective of someone who grew up on the cuisine of SF's mission district.

I wholeheartedly agree with you re: Tulcingo, and I say that from the perspective of someone who grew up on the cuisine of Mexican border town (y mi abuelita!).

Awesome! I think just about everything at Tulcingo is good, but the tortas are really special.

Just thinking about Tulcingo makes me hungry! Haven't had the tortas yet...Which one do you love?
