Hopkins Vineyard (CT) Barrel Tasting Event?

My husband and I are visiting the Litchfield area this weekend and I happened to see that there is a barrel tasting event at Hopkins Vinyard this weekend. Anyone ever been? I'm not expecting really fine wine but I thought it might be a nice diversion.

  1. I've been to the vineyard, but not for the barrel tasting. Good friends of ours have and really enjoyed it.

If you've never been, the vineyard is in a gorgeous setting on Lake Waramaug. We've biked there, too--guess how precarious that is as you're driving through those narrow roads. I'd say it's definitely worth the drive and you can collect a stamp in your CT Wine Trail passport. It sounds fun to me!

P.S. I like their Duet--and the story behind the label on that one is very cute.

I was there yesterday-- not exactly what I expected, but fun (the website had almost no information). It really was a huge "wine festival" in a tent with four stations for tasting (lines and crowds too)-- whites, reds, dessert and the "barrel tasting" which was just two samples of almost ready-to-be bottled wines. Only one trip to each station (they stamp your card). They had huge tables of cheeses and a bit of fruit, and a smaller table with someone giving samples of *good* cheese :) and talking about the cheese-makers . (he was a rep. from a cheese shop). LOADS of people, most of whom were smart enough to bring lawn chairs. Seems like lots of folks buy a bottle or two (or five )from the winery, open them up and spend the afternoon drinking the wine and munching on cheese and bread. But a pleasant outing and quite nice. We brought home some "red barn" and a peach wine which was surprisingly good.

      2. I think their wine tastes better than their barrels.

        (Sorry, couldn't resist!)
