We are headed for a long weekend trip to the Vero Beach area. We love dives with excellent fish and local fare. We also like fancy food but not always at the beach. Let us hear your thoughts...

We didn't have much luck. Most of the places on the beach (we were on Ocean drive and didn't want to drive anywhere) are on the touristy side - lots of fried food (although you'll never go wrong having conch fritters.

Ocean grill is identified by many elsewhere on Chowhound as the best in VB (although that really is damning with faint praise - one post refers to VB as a "culinary wasteland", and I am invclined to agreed. OG is kind of fun although highly "themed" (Sea shanty/sailing ship). The place has a 1970s feel to it. We had excellent service both nights that we went.

The one thing I must say is that the duck (which is a longstanding house specialty) was really extraordinarily good. The skin was perhaps the crispiest I have ever eaten. This is an excellent dish, and if you are a duck lover, you really should try it.

We just returned from 5 days in Vero Beach. The Lemon Tree was open for dinner and we ate there twice because it was so good. I understand that they will be closed for dinner until the fall. Breakfast and Lunch are excellent. The Pearl restaurant is also a favorite of mine.
