breakfast/early lunch near SFO

Hi
I will be spending 7 hours during a stopover at SFO this Friday morning and was hoping to leave the airport for a little bit for some nice breakfast/early lunch. Anything in that area wich is only a decent cab ride from the airport?
Thanks
Stefan

    1. You don't have to take a cab -- you can take BART from the airport into San Francisco, which opens up a lot of options. Where would you like to eat? What kind of experience are you looking for? How early is "early"?

Early means from around 7:30am - 2:30pm. I am really open to any specific area, but having red the first response above, dim sum or similar sounds very appealing. BART is a good idea, but am not sure where the BART stops in the city.

BART will be a lot easier and cheaper than a cab. You can BART to Millbrae and go to some of the dim sum places listed above (though those don't open until I think 11, there was an earlier post about this). You could also BART to the 16th St. or 24th St. stations in San Francisco and you'll be in the Mission, with lots of great options, lots of taquerias if you want that. You could also go straight to the Ferry Building (Embarcadero BART) and go to Boulette's Larder for breakfast, among a number of options.

Cabs are easier. They're right out the door by baggage claim, where the BART is upstairs and you have to take the inter-terminal train. BART takes 53 minutes to Embarcadero, according to Google, and runs every 20 minutes - your EV is one hour not counting the extra walk and the airtrain (depending on your arrival terminal)

Traffic might be a little heavy that time of day, but hasn't been bad recently. According to Google, the time is 20 minutes and no up-to-20-minute-wait. Even with 20 minutes of traffic, which would be HIGHLY unusual, you beat BART. Cabs are about $30 each way, BART is about $5.50.

There you have it - time vs money. Is it worth $25 for that extra half hour sitting at one of the most beautiful places on earth, or not? Your call.

I'd recommend the ferry building, it's pleasant, great view, good walking, doesn't smell much like pee. Although if I was going to recommend the mission, there's a coffee house on 24th by the bart station that's a sentimental favorite. Very san francisco. Can't remember the name - west of mission, north side of the street, one storefront from the corner.

I was thinking if he goes to Millbrae, then cabs would be a lot more expensive, and probably much faster. And it would be an extra $50 for a round trip cab ride from the Ferry Building, I certainly would sacrifice 30 minutes for $50 dollars!

cab from the airport to Embarcadero is more than $30. the last time I took a cab from SFO to my (then) home in Bernal Heights, which is at least 10 minutes and several miles closer to SFO than the Embarcadero, it was closer to $40. and I think that was before tip.

For the OP: you have enough time, go to 511.org or www.bart.gov for your options, information on BART stops, etc.

It shows that SFO to Embarcadero BART takes 32mins

If your decided to go all the way to the Embarcadero (as seems to be the consensus), another option that's cheaper and often faster is the SamTrans Express bus (line KX). According to the schedule it takes 25minutes although probably not during morning rush: http://transit.511.org/accessible/sch...

Hmmmm ... you could take BART in and SamTrans back -- it leaves the Transbay Terminal every half hour:

My mistake. The Google time includes walking through the terminal (16 minutes) and walking through the bart station to the ferry building (6 minutes).

With that much time to kill, you really should take BART all the way to the Embarcadero, browse though the Ferry Building and have breakfast/lunch. Plenty of options, and you'll be able to stretch your legs, get some fresh air, and enjoy the Bay. The weather is supposed to be really good this weekend, too.

Dim sum in Millbrae is great, but they don't open until 11, and you don't want to hang around the airport area just for that.
