New York (via) Post - Best Mail Order NYC
Hi Hounds - I just had a great experience last month ordering fresh pasta and pesto from Raffetto's - they shipped to me in L.A. and everything arrived fine - I now have several pounds of fresh pasta happily sitting in the freezer - of course two pounds of papp went first week toward a rabbit ragu and the aforementioned pesto! I like making my own pasta on occasion, but there is something about theirs . . . it must be the flour they use and the NYC tap water . . . just an incredible texture.
Anyway, this prompts me to ask - what other places do you like to mail order from? Any places you'd avoid? My own good experiences are limited to: Zabars, Barney Greengrass, H&H, Bazzini's, and now Raffetto's.

Katz's. You can do mail order for their prastrami! They will be vacuumed sealed and shipped to you overnight.

OMG. I did NOT need to learn this. Now I'm kinda sorry I asked. This could become . . . a problem. ;-) Thank you!

Russ & Daughters and Barney Greengrass have always served me well (no complaints from the gift recipients)!

I also had great results from Russ & Daughters, though it is not cheap.

For outstanding (probably the best in the country) meat, Lobel's will ship FRESH (not frozen so it gets ice crystals and damages the meat) anywhere in the country. Their steaks are an investment to be sure, but they are truly amazing - better quality than I've had in many of the best steakhouses in the city (they sell only the top 1-2% of USDA prime). Schaller and Weber, the classic German butcher in Yorkville, ships as well. I cannot live without their sublime double smoked bacon for soups, stews, etc.
Meanwhile, would you mind sharing your rabbit ragu recipe? That sounds great!

Hi sophistk8 - Thanks for that I am checking Lobel's out as we speak! Rabbit Ragu recipe I roughly follow is from Joe Scarpone of Tra Vigne that I learned quite a few years ago when I sold wine and food products to his restaurant - it may be on line but if not repost a request - basically it is browned cut up rabbit, onion, celery, carrot, red wine, wild mushrooms, bay, chicken stock, sage, canned tomato, paparadelle, and a bit of butter and parmegian - nothing fancy!

Hi Pigeage - Just saw your reply, thanks! I'm thinking of trying the ragu tonight, but have a question...roughly how much tomato are you adding to the braise? I assume you sweat the mirepoix after browning the rabbit, and add the tomato after you deglaze the pan with the wine?
Thanks much!

Ideal Cheese also does mail order - I had great experiences using them when I lived in Miami. So does Artisanal, though I've not tried them, and Di Palo started doing mail order in the last year.
I wonder if Russ & Daughters does mail order?
