The Modern - Wine Advice

Heading to The Modern tomorrow for a birthday celebration for two. I selected it based on all of the raves on this board so thank you for your mouth-watering reports. I went on their website to preview the wine list. I am taking my sister and I do not want to break the bank. Has anyone had a good experience with a red under $100 on the list? I am open to all varietals but I would say my preference would be for a pinot noir, a blend, or a balanced cab versus a powerful cab. My main goal is good wine, good vintage, good value.

I'd also be interested in hearing if anyone had the wine pairings (even though that would ratchet the whole deal up to where I could buy a $200 bottle!) but just thought I'd ask in case someone thinks it's a must!

Thanks so much!

  1. The corkage at the modern is relatviely low ($20 I think), so you may want to byob, if cost really is an issue.

Is that for every day or just their special BYOB Sundays?

Corkage is free on Sundays (they even gave me a free bottle opener to keep). Otherwise, I believe it's $20.

The Modern's formal dining room is not open on Sunday. So, BYO Sunday is for the Bar Room. Also, with regard to the corkage fee, again, that $20 may be for the Bar Room. The dining room's corkage might be higher -- more in line with EMP, where it's $35 per bottle. A call to The Modern is the best way to find out.

    2. My husband did the wine pairings with the tasting menu we had, and he felt they were excellent. Is it a must? I think that depends on whether you are fine with just one wine, in your case, a red, with all your courses, or you think your experience would be enhanced by specific pairings of whites and reds. Even though I don't drink, what I do know from discussing the concept of pairings with my husband and other wine connoisseurs is that quite often, paired wines enhance certain nuances and flavors in dishes and make them truly shine. Regardless of what you decide, I hope your meal will be as stellar as ours was.

      Happy Birthday and Bon Appetit!

Thanks RGR - I am so intrigued by the pairings and hearing your feedback is inspiring me. I've done tastings at various restaurants before but I love to hear about people's specific experiences. Thanks for the thumbs up.
