Sacramento/Elk Grove help

rednails May 11, 2009 08:53 AM

Hi hounds, I will be at Sheldon High School (Knightsbridge Drive) this week, and need a quick/easy/relatively inexpensive dinner nearby. I am totally unfamiliar with this area so I don't want to go too far from the school. Timing is really critical. I am advised there are a lot of fast food options near the school, but that would be a last, desparate resort if I can't get something better.

I am driving to the Sacto Airport later that night, so a snack stop would be nice too.

Many thanks!

Don't know if it's too late, but Nathan's Chinese restaurant on Bruceville (x is Laguna) is the best in the area. For fast food, if you must, there's a Habit Burger joint across the street (their veggie burger is actually quite tasty). I spend time in that area because I care for my mom long-distance.

It's not too late, thanks! Habit Burger may work if it is close enough to the school. Back to the map again...

Right in the center of Sheldon is actually a kind of chowhound paradise.

Silva's Sheldon Inn, while not within the parameters of the OP, is really incredible. All fresh food, great menu and gracious hosts. One of my fave places in Sac area.

The Diner there is really good too, for diner food. Not D.D.D worthy but pretty sweet food.

The Taco truck that parks in the feed store or bar parking lot is the best in the area. It is a must stop destination when in the area. Buck tacos. Menudo. WOOO!

The Chinese place in Sheldon is good too. Not the greatest but better than most.

The Elk Grove brewery (in old Elk Grove) has great beer and realll good pup type food. Love the place.

The Sheldon Inn is a great rec, but it's not that close to the school. Also, ISTR hearing that the Elk Grove Brewery closed recently, but I'm not sure about that.

Elk Grove Brewery and Restaurant is indeed closed according to their web site.

Well that sucks. haven't been there in a while. I hate it when breweries go under.

Can you tell me where the tack truck/feed store parking lot is in relation to the school? Again, I am totally unfamiliar with the area (and probably won't ever be there again). I have a very tight time-frame that day so quick and easy is essential.

          Many thanks!!

If you know where you're going, the feed store is probably not more than 10 minutes from the high school. Then again, NOTHING in Sheldon is more than about 10 minutes from the high school. If you *don't* know where you're going, you could end up in Galt! (Of course, if you find yourself in Galt, go to the Squeeze Inn for killer burgers!) Sheldon High is not in Sheldon, tho, it's in Elk Grove...and I don't know what the food options are like closer to the school.

I have never been there before, don't expect I'll be there again unless a similar situation arises, which I highly doubt. I've done Mapquest to get there but that's the extent of my knowledge of the area.

My other thought is to bring some food from home in a cooler and then eat in my car in the parking lot. I'm going from home (Bay Area) to Stockton first, checking into my hotel there, then on to the school. I am at the mercy of traffic and other things out of my control.

Last, desperate thought--what ARE the fast food options there? Truly, I'm at a loss as to what to do. If I time everything right, I have 45 minutes to eat once I get off the highway, fingers and toes crossed.

              Thanks again.

Since you're coming from the south, I am now seriously recommending the Squeeze Inn in Galt (corner of Industrial Way and Pringle Avenue). It's a bit of a chore to get there from the south, but worth it. Alternately, there are a ton of fast food joints along Highway 99 in Elk Grove...pick an offramp and there'll be something.

As for your airport-bound snack, I don't know what qualifies as a snack, but the shortest route to the airport from Elk Grove takes you past Broadway in Sacramento, and the local public radio station has had a series on restaurants on Broadway: http://www.capradio.org/news/specials...

Wow , you can really recommend some good restaurants in Elk-grove.

You should post this information on the bizymoms elk-grove mom community. They are constantly looking for the best restaurants in town. http://www.bizymoms.com/elk-grove/ind...

Why not turn the bizymoms onto Chowound?

I think these two are close to Sheldon Hi, and are not chains. On the way to the airport, we like CF Cheng, one of the best Cantonese place in Sac.
