U.S. across Mass.

So, I'll be driving U.S. 20 from East to West.
Looking for places along U.S. Route 20.

Some towns along the way:
Boston, Sturbridge, Marlborough, Springfield, Pittsfield.

I'm interested in chicken, sandwiches, BBQ and ice cream parlours.
No interest in Mexican or Seafood

  1. I'll take a lick at the ice cream part, as I've done at least 3 cross country road trips with stops predicated on trying the local ice creams.
I love Herrell's in Northampton (not that far from Springfield). My fave is chocolate pudding...but the hot fudge is great, the whipped cream real.

In Sturbridge, I'd recommend Rovezzi's Restaurant if you want good italian food.

But...for what you are looking for, Enrico's Pizza is very good and also has a full bar. It is on the Rt. 20 West side.

Speaking of Herrell's you can also get it at Lickety Split in North Adams at MASS MoCA (about half an hour north of Pittsfield). They have upside down trees there as well, but those are not to be eaten.

If you do make it up that way, BrewHaHa cafe in North Adams has some pretty good sandwiches. I like the Eggplant Panini with Spanish olive relish (it's got a nice sweet flavor). The Spinach wrap (usually vegetarian, they are always changing the ingredients) is usually pretty interesting and tasty. They might be a little pricy, but I like the value for what they serve.

I usually get non-meat items there so the strength of my recommendation is on those, but it's one of my favorite local places.

Lickety Spilt has very limited Herrell's flavors compared to the Noho store. Same with Lickety Split in Williamstown.

      2. Not quite chicken, but White Hut in Springfield is a road food spot, and has great burgers with "melted" grilled onions. Theodore's in Springfield has BBQ but I don't think it's all that unique.

I also love the chocolate pudding ice cream at Herrell's, should you come through that way.

        1. I should probably make it clear, the towns I listed are just landmarks along the way to give people an idea of where the road goes. I'm open to stopping anywhere along the route.

thanks for the suggestions so far.

          1. Hinsdale is a very small town that is kind of close to Pittsfield (everything's pretty much spread out in the Berkshires), and they have a really nice Ice Cream shop, Topsy's Treats. I went a couple times last summer and the frozen custard was awesome. I think they do soft serve too, can't remember what else they have.

            1. LOTS of good food in Waltham.
