  1. A number of places along Kingsland Road for Vietnamese - my favourites are Song Que and Viet Grill. There is also Bang which does great takeaway burgers and sandwiches.

Agreed. Top class grill, tasty meat and salad, and BYO.

Also agreed. I like 19 Numara Bos Cirrik on Stoke Newington High St more though. Grills are as good but the side dishes and starters are superior. Ozlem is also worth going to - specializes in lahmacun and perhaps does the best version in Dalston.

Thanks for the tip. I've wanted to try their onion salad so I'll give it a go next time I'm up that way.

I'm not a fan (of Mangal on Arcola St). The best thing going for it is the BYO option.

One time I went they had a problem with their plumbing or drains and the restaurant starting stinking like a sewer halfway through our meal. Rather than making apologies etc, they sprayed most of a can of air freshener around. If the sewage smell didn't put me off my food, the air freshener certainly did.

Another time, my friends went and asked if they could have Iskender (I'm not sure if it's actually written as a menu option anywhere). The waiter said yes, but served up a half-arsed effort which was barely edible. When my friend's complained they were told that they didn't know what an Iskender was meant to be like! (Despite having eating it dozens of times in London and Turkey.)

So I don't go there anymore.

When looking to impress someone with Turkish food I take them to a branch of 19 Numara Bos Cirrik. When they don't need impressing and just want Turkish food I take them to Canli Balik on Green Lanes (which isn't in Dalston, but is nearer my house).

        2. Not restaurants, but I JUST today blogged about the Turkish Food Centre off of Kingsland Road by Dalston Junction. Really interesting breads and Turkish stuff. Tomorrow, Ridley Road Market. Awesome. Great to check out on a Saturday morning. I also hear that the bagel place on Ridley Road is open 24-hours and fantastic. (And safe...apparently very popular with the local police.)

The bagels on Ridley Road are awful but yes, they are popular with the police as they are lodged right across the market. The Turkish supermarket is fab. Great for throwing a party - huge cheap 2kg tubs of hummous and lots of lovely fresh pittas and flat breads and a whole fridge counter of olives.

Re. mobiledisco's criticism of Mangal - I've never had an experience that bad but the place is definitely not what it once was - however it's still a great night out in a large group

          2. On Stoke Newington High Street, try gozleme at the sweet little bakery/cafe on the corner. I think it is number 66. So delicious.
