Olive Bread

I am a huge fan of anything olive especially olive bread. When the weather gets a little warmer, i would like to go on an olive bread-trail in Toronto and surrounding area. So far, my favorite olive bread is the ciabatta loaf from Metro (formerly Dominion). I know there must be better ones out there. If you guys can tell me where you get your favorite olive bread, I can start building my olive bread trail.

Thanks!

I highly recommend the Olive Fougasse from Brick St. It is delightful when fresh – crisp bottom crust, salty exterior, and great olives. Refreshes OK with toasting on day two.

I have tried Ace Olive Bread, Fred's Olive and Chipotle, and a couple of other grocery store loaves – the Brick's fougasse takes the prize.

Note: I have NOT tried Brick St's regular Olive Boule.

St.John's Bakery does a great rosemary olive bread. I think that Thuet has one too.

the best Olive bread I've had is Ace Bakery, available at most grocery stores..it's a round boule, crispy crust and soft and fluffy inside with lots of full black olive chunks...

The best olive bread I have ever had is Fred's Bread - Olive Chipotle. I have seen it at the Loblaw's at Vic Park & Gerrard (though have not checked lately) as well as the Beaver on Queen West (near Ossington)

Imagine huge chunks of fat green olives studded in a chewy on the inside and crisp on the outside bread that is finished with just a touch of heat.

La Bambouche sells a great Olive Bread too which I believe they make in house. La Bambouche is at Yonge & Eg, south of Eglinton. I think it is on Hillsdale, off of Yonge.

La Bamboche is on Manor Road, right next to Coquine, just east of Yonge.

Re below: Yes, the Fred's bread has an amazing crust and great green olive flavour.

Do you mean the Premier Moisson (sp?) one? That is brought in from Montreal, I think, and it is excellent. I also like the St. John's bakery green olive, cilantro loaf.

Yup. Premier Moisson. I love it but I keep thinking because it's from a grocery store that it must not be as good as ones from local bakeries. I have tried the St. John's bakery one, I think. Are you talking about the one on the lower level of St. Lawrence Market?

I was informed that Metro's Premiere Moisson loaves are bake off's, i.e., produced centrally, frozen, and baked quickly each day in the store.
Costco has a similar olive loaf, also bake off.

I thought the loaves (flash frozen) were brought in from Quebec. Yes, that means they're baked on site, but I think they still achieve excellent results.

We don't really know where the bakery is located. It is curious that a Premiere Moisson round white loaf is displayed in the Weston (Dempster's) section at Costco.

Hmmm. Yes, I had seen that at Costco but never looked up close. Did you try it?

No, it is thinly sliced and two loaves per package would dry up in my small household. But a neighbor swears by it.

I don't know, as I don't generally buy them at SLM. It's probably the same thing, though, as they're sold all over the city.
