Great Raleigh Happy Hour
Okay, I've tried it twice now, so I feel really good about recommending Tobacco Road Cafe for their Happy Hour. They are in Raleigh in the Glenwood South area, not too far from Hillsborough St. From 4-6, if you buy a drink of $2.50 or more, you can select from $1.95 or $2.95 food items. We have now tried the $1.95 nachos, and the $1.95 black-eyed pea cakes (with salad that includes oranges, grapefruit and pine nuts...yum!)...We have also tried the $2.95 burger, and barbecue sandwich (they make their own...very smokey and lean)...and their grilled chicken sandwich. All of these sandwiches come with side choice. I loved their collard greens. The fries are very good, as well. Food is really top-notch, and we've found some great drink choices as well. Mondays are mojito mondays for $4 (haven't caught that special though).

Hi all! Bumping up this thread.....
I'm so out of the going out for drinks after work type loop that it isn't even funny! So, as it is, I am drawing a blank on what are the cool type places these days.
I'd like to arrange for my BF's friends to meet up for cocktails to celebrate his birthday. I was trying to think of a good place North Hills, Glenwood South, or downtown to set as the venue, but ... I'm drawing a blank. The only place neither one of us like is Busy Bee, so that's out.
But a place for like maybe 20 people to meet up for drinks and appetizers? I don't want to do anything sit-down because then my BF will not be able to talk to all of his friends friends; I'd rather it be more casual.
Any suggestions? Thank you all!

re: cackalackie
Cackalackie, I agree with you. We went to Yardhouse on Sunday for an early dinner for the first and probably last time.
The half-price app's are only 50% Monday - Friday and it is only selected app's that are half price instead of the entire selection. I know someone has to pay for the space, but I find the food in almost every area to be over-priced. You are right; TV's are everywhere and it is cavernous and dark as far as the decor goes. The menu goes on for pages and pages and, as my BF said, it was confused. Just what type of restaurant do they want to be?
I ordered cheeseburger sliders and they arrived on buns that were processed white puffs of cheap-grade bread. I thought they were just okay. Once I took almost all the bread off, their taste improved dramatically.
My BF got the hot turkey sandwich. It also arrived on an inferior, mealy bun instead of a nice ciabatta or something heavy enough to carry the weight of the turkey. I thought they turkey itself was very nice, though he thought it was too garlicky. It also arrived with the cheese only partially melted.
He asked if they made their own desserts and the waitress said yes and he ordered a Crème brûlée. It arrived with banana slices on the top and chocolate chips under the crème. I told the waitress that the chips were not melted and she said was supposed to be that way.
The waitstaff was friendly and for the most part on time, but I thought could have been quicker given the early hour.
For 2 beers, the two sandwich-type entrees, and the crème brûlée, it was $48 something before tip. I really wish I had used that $48 to make something way more special at home.

Hey guys! Thought I would bump this up and see if there are any new ones to add? I see I posted this same question about this time last year --- I must have the winter-hom-hum-bored-blues!
I'm still checking this site, which continues to be good: http://raleighspecialstonight.com/
Anything else "special" though?

Monday, all day pints are $3 at the Flying Saucer on Harrington and Morgan Sts. Their beers are fantastic and their bar fare is some of the best. My personal favorite is the smoked salmon sandwich with capers and jalapeno pesto or the spicy beer cheese soup. Also, they have the best soft pretzels I have yet to taste.

had dinner there on Sunday. Very good. Had the Pineapple BBQ Shrimp burger with arugala and bacon salad with a lime vinigarette on the sandwhich. Fries were excellent. Everything is made from scratch, I highly reccomend this place not only for Happy Hour but to eat lunch or dinner

re: Tehama
You could try Sitti in downtown Raleigh. They have select appetizers for $4 between 4 and 6 Monday through Thursday. I believe it includes the hommos, baba ghanouj, feta cheese dip, chicken shwarma and a few other appetizers. They also have drink specials different days of the week as well to pair with these appetizer features.

Okay, what are some good places for happy hour food/drinks in Durham and Chapel Hill? The only ones I can think of right now are:
Blu Seafood has $5 apps and salads in the bar area (Mon-Sat, 4pm-7pm );
Mez has $2 (chicken, pork, etc.) and $3 (fish) tacos in the bar area (Mon-Fri, 4pm-6pm);
Bocci has $5 apps at the bar area (Sun-Thurs, 4pm-7pm).What are some other good ones?
