Oahu - Dim Sum at Tai Pan

Steve R May 7, 2009 07:40 PM

Take it from a Brooklyn, N.Y. long time chowhound, Tai Pan is excellent. Recommended by a CH'er from Oahu now relocated to NYC (I'm sure this board misses Kathy), we owe her big time for this. The food is fresh and varied, the owner very helpful and friendly & the price very reasonable. Located inside the Cultural Center at 100 Beretania (#167), this is a very nice dim sum destination place. Check out the offerings against the side wall (next to the dessert showcase) & order by sight, supplementing with the printed menu on the table. We have another week here... maybe we'll go back.

Might as well reply to mysef...

We went a 2nd time with some local friends on Sunday. Very crowded with a line out the door. Brisk take out business as well. We were seated in 15-20 minutes and the selection was endless and interesting. Again, we really liked everything served. Unfortunately, its 5000 miles away from home and we probably wont go for a 3rd try.

How does it compare to Legend's Seafood for Dim Sum? We usually go there, as Legend's is often acknowledged by local Chinese as the best Dim Sum on the island. I've been there a few times, and it's very good, though crowded (Had New Year's Day breakfast there, and it was packed).

Legend's reputation is beginning to slip. Whether it is because they have too many customers, or they can't maintain the same quality while operating two restaurants I have heard from more than one person that it just is not as good as it used to be. The last time I went there I was not as impressed, I thought they were just having an off day. But after hearing the same from others, I am beginning to wonder.

Hey KM, sorry to hear that about Legend. My family hasn't been there for a while, mostly because of the wait time, but it was one of our go to places when we took out of town guests. Not a good sign when more than one reliable local source says quality is slipping. Hope they can manage to turn things around.
