Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the Greater Los Angeles Area (including Orange & Ventura Counties and SW San Bernardino County)

Good local source for white pepper?

I've never actively sought it out...

Are we looking at best alternative being Ranch 99 or the various and sundry SGV Asian markets?

Can one find them in Korean supermarkets? (Koreatown is closer to my Fairfax-district home than the SGV)

Lastly, is it generally only available pre-ground? I'd prefer to buy whole peppercorns and grind them myself. Again, I've never actively sought them out so I really don't know what is commonly offered.

Thanks 'hounds.

Penzeys now has a shop in Santa Monica, also. What is it that marketing people want us to say at this point? Oh, yeah, it's a "must see" place. Among other things, they have "Whole White Peppercorns 2 varieties, both have a rich, winey, somewhat hot flavor," and both of which you'll be able to sniff and smell before your purchase in a variety of package sizes.

Yeah, I've been to the shops in Torrance and now Santa Monica and they're wonderful. I was hoping to stay closer to my area... Miracle Mile/Fairfax, so I guess Whole Foods is the answer.

Here's a freebie tip re Penzeys... if you subscribe to their catalogue, there's a coupon in each issue for a free bottle of whatever they're promoting this month. Last time it was their "Chili 3000" powder, and this month it's their "Freshly Ground Black Pepper". (Why they're not pushing whole spices instead of pre-ground, I'll never know...)

          Second.

        3. I've seen it in most Asian markets, including Korean markets. I'm partial to the "Special Grade White Pepper" - whole peppercorns. They're a product of Malaysia, but packed in the U.S. The plastic jar I've got has a blue top, with a blue label written in Chinese, English and French. I got mine at A-Grocery Warehouse on Sunset Blvd, just east of Echo Park Ave. But I've seen them all over the place.

          1. As it so happens, I am in possession of 3 pounds of whole white-peppercorns that I wouldn't be able to use up if my life depended on it. A few months ago, I bought oodles of spices while working on corning my own beef (it didn't suck but certainly wasn't worth the effort) and white peppercorns were called for.

That said, I'd be more than happy to snail mail you a couple of cups of the stuff. Won't last forever and I'd just as soon share as throw it away.
