The Nabisco Royal Lunch Milk Crackers Dilemma

These were the best crackers around and unfortunately have been discontinued after a 90 plus year run. One of the first crackers they made. Oh well my area depleated there supply around 5 years ago now..... there was an alternative Mrs. Allisons Milk Lunch Crackers... also good but not quite up to the nabiscoes Milk Linch cracker standard but very close.... was getting that in my area until late this past year .....i searched all my local haunts that carried them and turned up nothing... finally i broke down wrote to the company alas it was taken over by another and this tooo was dropped from there productions list.

Is there no sacred traditions and favorites able to be left alone and kept on the shelves for those that bought them. Every time the store got them they were sold out within days.

The companies both said maybe one day when enough people want them again they might think about making them once more but not until then.

If you would like to write drop a line and i will submit addresses for you to write to.

    1. I have lived in CA for over 30 years and for the past 20 years have had to have my family send me Milk Lunch Crackers and Bells Seasoning tomake our family's turkey stuffing. I noticed that the last time they so graciously sent me the crackers they weren't the Nabisco brand. You're right, they weren't the same. Please send the links.

        1. Most of my youth was spent in Maine, and Milk crackers were a continuous part of my diet. I have lived in New Mexico for the 20 years and could not get them west of the Mississippi. My mother would send them to me for Christmas and each time I took my family to Maine I would stock up on them. When I go a computer I started ordering them from Amazon. I and my children were devastated when they stopped making them. I check on line every year to see if they have brought them back to no avail. I found Chowhound through my search for Milk Crackers. I will keep hoping for the day they put them back on the market.

I also grew up in New England (and still live there) and enjoyed Nabisco Royal Lunch Milk Crackers (along with also discontinued Uneeda Biscuits).

Recently, I notice a house branch Milk Lunch Cracker at Market Basket in Tewksbury, MA.
This is a regional supermarket chain in Northern MA and New Hampshire.

I plan to buy a box this week and will let fellow hounds know my opinion of the product. Previously I have been very satisfied with all Market Basket house brand crackers and cookies.
I also will attempt to find out who is producing the crackers and if they are packed for other chains in other arts of the country.

I know it's been awhile, but yesterday I finally remembered to buy a box of the Market Basket brand 'New England Lunch Milk' crackers.
                  I had some this morning:
They are not as thick as the Royal Milk Luinch from Nabisco, but are as flavorful as I remember.
I also find that they are not as flaky as the Royal Lunch of my youth, BUT Nabisco was still using animal fat (lard) in those days. They are comparable in taste and consistency to the Royal of the early 2000s, just slightly smaller.
I had them plain, with margarine and with chicken salad and am a happy camper.
I looked at the box, hoping to figure the source, but as Market Basket has no Connecticut or Pennsylvania stores, there is no Connecticut bakery license number and the item is not registered with the PA department of agriculture. The crackers are made in Canada. I might try some sleuthing to see if the USDA has any source info on an imported item.

                  Shelf price $2.29 per box.
                  I'll be buying these again.

                2. It's been years since I had either, but aren't milk crackers and cream crackers basically the same thing? Jacob's cream crackers are square and Royal Lunch are round, but my sense memory is that they were close to identical, and you can still buy cream crackers either online or at any store that has an expat UK/Ireland customer base.

                    1. re: BarmyFotheringayPhipps

Jacob's cream crackers are much more dense than Milk Lunch crackers were. The milk Lunch cracker was flakier and could separate into strata when broken apart.

                      • i just found osem cream crackers. not the same but still very close and now we can have thanksgiving stuffing
