Yonge / Bloor area

I'm looking for a good place to go with a small group (8 people) in the Yonge and Bloor area for an early dinner before a theatre event. I know the area fairly well but am challenged to find the right combo of edible, accessible and affordable.

What do you mean by accessible? Wheelchair friendly?

Probably not the best word choice - I mean in the sense of a place where 8 work colleagues would 1) be able to get in and 2) be comfortable in the environment. Not snobbish, not too serious a surrounding.

Bloor Street diner is fairly solid and might fit your bill. It's not going to blow you away, or be a life-altering culinary experience, but I'd say it's pretty edible, accessible and affordable. If you do a search on this board, you should be able to find a fair number of comments about BSD (some people trash it, others agree that it's good but not great).

If you want to venture a bit farther afield, L'Unita (Ave. north of Bloor) is great.

There are a ton of places on Yonge Street, both just south of Bloor and just North of Bloor. Lots of Indian places, Thai places, etc. I would say google Earth it and see what's nearby.

I was going to suggest Wish, on Charles, but it appears they've become "Black Skirt", serving Italian!

I second Black Skirt. Went last weekend and it's a much better than the so so Wish. It's comfortable, casual and tasty. Most mains are under $20. Portions are not huge so best to order a an app, also save room for dessert, they're excellent. It's basic, well done Italian.

Volo is comfortable, affordable and definitely not snobbish. I find the food quite acceptable although you'll find a few negative comments on the board. Great offering of local microbrews.

I second Foccacia and Fire on the East Side (the latter a little less so). Both of these are, IMHO, much better than Bloor Street Diner. I love Ethiopia house, which is all of the things you are looking for but obviously you would want to check with your colleagues first.
