I am a huge fan of the Gelato at Dolce Gelato in White Rock.

We have a few spots in Calgary but nothing comparable
Where do I find the best Gelato (or ice cream) in Victoria ?

I'm in town for the next week so need quick response if you can help!!!

  1. Us Calgarians do love our Mackay's and the Gelato at the Farmers market or Amato Gelato... they are all good, just not the same as Dolce

I don't think Victoria has any amaaazing ice cream spots, but Sweet Memories on Government (near Johnson) is a Victoria institution. It's only open from late spring to early fall and the same two people have been working there for as long as I can remember... possibly FOREVER. They make fresh waffle cones and the smell of those cones wafts all the way down Government... it's lovely. They have a couple flavours of soft ice cream and frozen yogurt, which is why I go. I think their hard ice cream is Island Farms.

Thanks Jetgirly - Exactly what I needed!

No, Victoria is not a bastion of good ice cream. I figure it is simply too cold here much of the year for people to crave ice cream very often.

However, some of the Italian bakeries around time make good gelato. Ottavio's on Oak Bay avenue would be my first recommendation. They use of lot of premium ingredients in their gelato flavours.

Willy's Bakery makes gelato in summer (not sure if they are up and running with that yet).

And the Italian Bakery on Quadra at Tolmie makes fairly good gelato, too.

As for ice cream, I must say my favourite local brand is Udder Guy from Duncan, but I think you can buy it in the carton only (not sure where you would be able to get it by the scoop or made into a sundae. Market on Yates carries it by the pint).

I second the Udder Guys - so if you decide to drive up to Cowichan Bay - it's worth the stop in there (in one block you'll hit Hilary's Cheese, Udder Guys, and True Grain Bakery) - all worth the 30min drive from Vic.
I recall a quick report on someone having a special gelato that Peter Zambri had made for the menu that night - if you hit Zambri's - you may luck out.
I also love a soft ice cream at the Beacon Drive-in - it's so traditional Victoria (like the Dutch Bakery - another in the 'institution' category). Udder guy's website lists Thrifty's, Fairways and a few other places in addition to Market on Yates for picking up their ice cream pints (they make a ton of flavours, just depends on which ones each store decides to carry). Toasted coconut is my favourite).

              Perfect!

Cassie - I have used your list to piece together a complete map in powerpoint that is now resident in my phone/PDA as well as printed out, it worked excellent (thanks again for making this possible!)

All the mentioned places from my "Victoria Itinerary" and this "Best Gelato" topic from all "hounders" have been added and we are packed and ready for our flight today.

Because of each each of your recommendations I'm certain this will be one of the most memorable trips!

Whenever I travel I always try to seek out the hidden gems, but its difficult! I'm a nubie to CH, and am astonished at how each of you have all made this so easy!

Thank you to all who have posted! I hope to hit as many as possible and will definitely submit a summary...

of course the really disappointing thing that happens when you find these hidden gems/places you crave when you travel... is that you long for the next visit!!!

OP may not get this in time but I'm so glad cassie mentioned the Beacon! We have gone there for soft serve forever when we are in Victoria. So very good and "old school" creamy. Two caveats though: don't order any other food here, and resist the temptation to order a large cone or you will have to find somewhere to lie down. Unfinishably big and rich :-).

Not to late at all - thanks grayelf!

                  1. re: grayelf

Beacon Drive In ice cream is so rich it makes me sick to eat an entire small cone. I can only eat about half of a small.

                  2. re: MartinT

I hope you have a really great time here MartinT - if you have free time after/before your Butcharts reservation on Saturday - it's "A day in France' at Ottavio's in Oak Bay (home of gelato, cheeses, & baking) - they'll be serving up french fare, wine tasting, music & more 11am-3pm.
I, as the other CH'ers, await your report.

                    1. re: cassie

Thanks Cassie, Will attempt to make it to "Day in France" time permitting (I do enjoy French fare & wine!)

I owe all the CH'ers who helped me plan this trip a beverage on my deck if they are ever in the neighborhood. (yes the picture in my profile is my back yard) http://www.panoramio.com/photo/21791421
