We are heading to NYC in a week and are staying at the Excellsior Hotel on W.81st street. Looking for recommendations for dinner for our first night. Not to pricy because we will be a little tired from our trip.

I had a pretty good meal recently at Vai wine bar on 77th...a lot of options-salad, cheeses, pasta, etc - and a pretty nice wine by the glass selection, too-

Also Isabella's sister restaurant, Ocean Grill, up a couple of blocks on Columbus (directly in back of Natural History and about a block from your hotel). I particularly love their very reasonable brunches for which you can and must reserve, can't reserve for brunch at Isabella's.

Kefi, delicious and low-priced Greek food on Columbus...a few blocks from your hotel.

i wouldn't recommend Kefi -- especially after a long trip when the OP is tired, as Kefi is quite loud...i find the food very mediocre too...

You have pricey right in your hotel w/ Eighty-One.

          Some options:
Shake Shack - fantastic burgers/shakes - 77th/Columbus - can always take it out and bring it right back to your room

Barbao - vietnamese-ish. Can always nibble in the lounge 82nd/Columbus

          Celeste - Italian - good and cheap/cramped and crowded - 83rd/Amsterdam - cash only

Pinch/s'mac - pizza by the inch and macaroni and cheese - 83rd/Columbus

          others will chime in...

            i second Bar Bao...

but my first rec is Cafe Ronda -- Argentinian tapas on Columbus betw 71/72...very reasonably priced food&wine, rustic, comfy, nice staff....the abondigas (lamb meat balls in tomato sauce) are awesome...having this lived on the UWS for 7 months now, this is only restaurant that i can truly recommend in the area...
