Chinese hot and sour soup at St. Clair and Yonge

pâté chinois May 6, 2009 11:11 AM

Just moved offices and am now at St. Clair and Yonge - does anyone know where I could get my fix of hot and sour soup? The only Chinese place I know of - and tried - is in the St. Clair Centre, just by the subway entrance, and their hot and sour soup is neither hot nor sour - what a disappointment it was!

Hi fellow pate hound - Yonge and St. Clair is a wasteland for many culinary things, particularly good Chinese. There's this one restaurant, a few blocks south of St. Clair on Yonge - Golden Star maybe? It's one of those "Chinese and Canadian" cuisine spots, pretty threadbare, mostly take-out. I know that Estufarian has eaten there and said it wasn't bad. So Estufarian, do you know if they have credible hot and sour soup there?

Other than that, I'm afraid you're out of luck - I know of nothing else within walking distance to help you satisfy your craving.

Are you referring to here: http://www.goldenhouserestaurant.com/?

If so, I've been there a few times because my office is nearby. They lean much more Chinese-Canadian (e.g., egg rolls and even fish & chips) then authentic Chinese. I've never had the hot & sour soup but have tried their fried rice and noodles. As long as you understand that they're geared towards "Westerners" you won't be too disappointed, especially since their prices are very reasonable which is why I kept going back.

That's the one! I am shocked that they have a website - and a cute one too (love the little "whoosh" noise when you click on the various links)!

Yup - they have a 'version' of it. Pretty run-of-mill - but if you're desperate, give it a try - won't cost you much!

There's a little old school Chinese place somewhere midway between Summerhill and St. Clair that would probably have it.

Thank you all! I'll check Golden House! :-) (and if I'm not crazy about the soup, I'll have spent only $3.25 - not bad...

This place is indeed a 'relic' - what passed for 'Chinese Food' 20 years ago. But it delivers the appropriate 'grease hit' and has absolutely no pretensions. And the cheapest place in the neighbourhood.
