Charlotte North Carolina suggestions

I'm looking for restaurant suggestions in the area-fresh food, from scratch, low cost casual "dives". Thanks much!

    1. Not sure exactly what you're looking for, but I think the Penguin, Lulu, Alexander Michael's, Price's Chicken Coop, Pio Pio and Dim Sum might fit the bill.

carolinadawg has some good suggestions. iIll add Sir Edmond Halley's (British-style pub with good, sometimes adventurous food), Cabo Fish Taco (the name says it all), The Crepe Cellar (the name says some of it, but there is much more), Mac's Speed Shop (bbq, brisket, mac 'n' cheese, green bean casserole), Dish (comfort food with a twist) and Revolution Pizza & Ale House (pizza using fresh, local ingredients).

          • I pretty much agree with almost every other place already mentioned, but heres a few more:

The Comet for burgers, sandwiches, and fries.
            Hef's for bar/grill type food.
            Zio for pizza/Italian-American.
            Austin's for Caribbean takeout.
            Thai Thai (takeout only)
Almost any Vietnamese restaurant in the city.

Thanks! Any good soul food recommendations?

                  1. re: kbrowning

Simmons on Graham Street is pretty good. It definitely meets the definition of a dive. Mert's, on College Street gets a lot of love on this board. I have only been there once and frankly wasn't real impressed, but it may be worth a visit. Both are located in our downtown area, known as "uptown".

                      1. re: kbrowning

I was going to mention Simmons and for some reason forgot. Its good. So is LaWan's on S. Tryon at Arrowood.

                      2. I should have added Commonhouse to my original list. On Central Avenue. Excellent.

                          1. You must go to two spots. I was born and raised in Charlotte. The Peguin, I cannot remember the address, even Guy Furiti went there and was crazy for the fried pickels. And Vinnie's Sardine, it's like a low country seafood/Jimmy Buffet place, on South Blvd, great food!! Enjoy!!
