There's a really great place on the corner of 3rd ave and 22nd street. It's nothing fancy, but if you like comfort Italian food (great cheese and wine selection, brilliant pasta dishes), you should try Lamarca

It's super homey atmosphere, friendly staff...and comfy enough to dine alone.

Try the bar area of Giorgios of Gramercy. It is really good and the prices are great.

Gramercy Tavern is a perfect place to eat alone at the bar.

It would be helpful to have some specifics. Cuisine preferences? Casual or fancy? Bar dining or comfortable sitting at a table? Per person budget for food only (drinks, tax & tip additional)?

Casual...prefer the bar. 40-45 bucks is my limit.

Try Bar Stuzzichini just below Madison Sq Park. It has a huge bar and its a nice place to dine alone for a well-priced, casual meal.

Personally, I hate eating alone in a restaurant, but if you're all by your lonesome you can't go wrong sitting at the bar at Union Square Cafe.
