Which of these four downtown restaurants should I go to for my anniversary dinner?

I'm planning an anniversary dinner for myself and my girlfriend. We want to try someplace we've never been before, and have narrowed it to four choices:

Perry St.
Mercer Kitchen

Right now we're both leaning toward THOR because we like the menu, but I've heard mixed reviews.

Does anyone have any thoughts about the relative merits of these four places?

  1. I've been to THOR, Perry St., and Mercer Kitchen. Perry St. would be my choice - the food is very good, the room is pretty, the service is professional. THOR has good food as well (and it's a bit more "creative" than Perry St.), but there's no getting around the fact that it's in a hotel lobby: maybe not the best choice for an anniversary meal. I think Mercer Kitchen is a train wreck, but I haven't been there for at least 5 or 6 years.

I don't think I'd mind the hotel lobby vibe as long as the food is good.

Anyway, isn't the restaurant a little separated from the lobby? I mean, it's not like there's bellhops walking past my table, right?

Yes, it's some distance from the rest of the lobby; it's not like sitting across from reception watching people check in. But it can get loud. Then again, that may not bother you at all. When I hear "anniversary," I picture a different kind of restaurant, is all.

Butter was only OK food wise even when it had the bright young thing going for it, say, five years ago. Nothing special about it now.
I agree that Mercer Kitchen is a wreck, Perry Street is the gem of the bunch and note that THOR, while it had its charms, wasn't charming enough to avoid the coming total revamp.

I have to admit I'm a bit curious as to how this list was generated.

Actually, this list was generated by looking at what was available on Open Table. These four places are places we've never been but have always been curious about.

Fair enough. I'd cut Butter and Mercer Kitchen immediately, recommend Perry Street and choose THOR only if you're sufficiently interested in it that you must try it before it gets completely re-done (I think that's scheduled for this summer).

    2. Out of the 4 I've only been to Perry Street (for lunch), but from what I know/heard/read about the others, I don't think any of them are in the same league as Perry St. Go there!

      1. I've only been to THOR and while I liked the strange location of the restaurant (and actually didn't find it all that strange - just kind of different) I thought the food was good but it didn't set me on fire.

        1. I went to THOR some time ago (maybe 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 years ago) but still vividly remember the way oversalted, overpriced food and terribly sweet cocktails I had. It was crowded and loud, too. Plus, the service sucked. Other than that, it was great...
