Blue Pig Tavern, Cape May

  • 0

Reservation was made for 7:00 pm but we were about half an hour early on Friday evening, yet we were set immediately. I had a Blue Pig Martini and while Mr. B got a glass of Merlot, my drink was ok but not anything special.

I started with the steamed mussels with their white sauce while Mr. B had the jumbo shrimp cocktail. The steamed mussels were in actually in a garlic herb sauce, and I found the garlic a bit overpowering. The jumbo shrimp cocktail consisted of four shrimps, not that jumbo but it was an appetizer! The bread was nice but it could be better if it had been hot or at least warm. I had halibut for main course, it came with some steamed vegetables and wild rice. The halibut was pan seared and it came out quite good, the vegetables and the rice were pretty much standard. Mr. B chose the seared tuna with sesame and scallops for his entrée, the tuna was nicely done with the exterior lightly seared and raw and tender in the center, the aroma of the sesames which formed the coating for the tuna was wonderful. The drawback of that dish was the scallops, accordingly to Mr. B, they were not very flesh(got to take his word because I did not try them!) and they looked a bit dry and overcooked to me. By the way, Mr. B’s tuna was the dinner set and there was a garden salad or soup that went along with it. He got the salad, just a standard spring mix.

We thought contemplated about dessert but did not have any since a little child was crying near our table and we figured that a nice glass of wine back in the balcony of our hotel was more inviting. The bill was $98 excluding tips, and it was an average meal.

Couple of things that I wanted to mention here, the parking in Cape May is 10am to 10pm, and they are quite efficient in giving out the tickets. We were in the Blue Pig Tavern before in the winter and I actually prefer that to this recent visit a few days ago. Cape May has a different kind of charm during off season and the Blue Pig Tavern has a beautiful fireplace and you could have the place to yourself. As we were leaving restaurant at about a quarter passed 8:00pm, the place started filling up. I believe that situation will intensified as the weather gets better…..
