Pt. Reyes Oysters and Marshall Store Update

jillyju May 3, 2009 11:16 PM

Today was spent consuming Pt. Reyes oysters. We had half a dozen Hog Island's on the half shell at The Station House cafe that were unbelievably sweet and delicious, along with another 6 "bbq'ed" with garlic and butter which were Drakes Bay Oysters. They too were really delicious. It was 24.50 total for the dozen.

We then headed to the Marshall Store, which has gone through some major upgrading since I was last there. We had a dozen of their oysters on the half shell, which they said were "their own", meaning that they are growing their own. They were served with a vinegar/shallot wash that was a little bit sweeter than I would prefer, but the oysters were spectacular on their own and didn't need a thing. Their oysters were every bit as sweet, briny, and transcendent as the Hog Island ones at Station House, and were a better deal. These were 6 for $10, and they actually gave us 13 oysters. We also shared a crab salad sandwich which had plenty of crab but wasn't really anything special at this time of year (the crab seemed fresh but without the flavor I enjoy when it is the peak of the season). The sandwich was ( I think) $12 or $13. The store is cash only, although there is an ATM right on the premises.

We had discussed continuing on the road to Nick's for a final dozen, but decided to quit on a high note. A great visit to my favorite part of the Bay Area.

The photos are, in order: Drake's Bay Oysters with garlic and butter, raw Hog Islands, raw Marshall Store, the Marshall Store oyster board.

The Marshall Store guy bought the Tomales Bay Oyster Co. a little while back. Thus the "their own":

Great food, But the service is slooooow time after time. It's almost like the wait staff just doesn't care.
