The demise of ice cream in S. Tampa
We went to grab some ice cream earlier tonight and discovered to our dismay that two locally-owned businesses have gone under just in the past 2 weeks: Abbott's Frozen Custard in Hyde Park Village, and Joffrey's coffeehouse (which scooped Old Meeting House ice cream and was an all-around pleasant place to eat it) on MacDill (south of Euclid). The Marble Slab (Howard near Swann) went under several months ago. What??
(Yes, there's still a Joffrey's in Channelside.)
We repaired to the Cold Stone on Neptune just off Dale Mabry, and it was as good as ever, with a line out the door, btw. But I am bummed to see two businesses I frequented gone, and the ice cream landscape of S. Tampa seriously diminished. RIP, Abbott's and fresh-scooped Old Meeting House at Joffrey's...
What's left?
Gelato at Pane Rustica, Publix Greenwise and Duomo at International Plaza
I think they scoop Old Meeting House at Daily Eats on Howard (blech)
fro-yo (Sunni Bunni, Cali, etc.)
Cold Stone on Neptune
those drive-through frozen yogurt places, one on Henderson, another on MacDill, what the heck are they called??
What else?

I see that no new ice cream places have been recorded in a year. That's sad. I'll add one: the Taste of Boston at the foot of the Ballast Point Pier serves about a dozen flavors of Old Meeting House ice cream. They have indoor and outdoor seating, with a great view across the bay to downtown, and a kid's playground. Could you want more?
The drive-through frozen yogurt place listed in the original post is Yogurt Naturally on MacDill near West Bay Vista Ave. It is not soft-serve - it is dipped and I like it a lot.
As for the Ginger Haagen-Dasz Five ice cream that some of us raved about last year, sadly it seems to have been discontinued. I turned up a lonely pint in a Winn-Dixie in Pinellas County about six months ago, but since then I failed to find it when looking in Tampa, New York City, and Los Angeles. It is no longer listed on the Haagen-Dasz web site.

I hope ice cream lovers will sample and support La Unica Michoacana in the small shopping center on MacDill at Columbus. They have ice creams and paletas (popsicles) in many flavors, some of them unusual tropical fruits like tamarind, guanabana, mamey, and passionfruit. Nut flavors too: pecan and almond. Some of them are non-dairy sorbets. Their products are made on-site. Some are distributed to other vendors, but I don't know where else you can buy them. I might prefer the flavors to be a little more intense, but still, it has a great texture, a very interesting variety, and the helpings are generous and fairly priced.

Just found out that Datz got some stellar looking Gelato, will be by on Friday for a taste & will report back. They even have blood orange, sounds awesome. Apparently some fun unique/foodie flavors (Red Bull Gelato!) on the way too.

I was glad to have my HD-5 insanity affirmed by the New York Times today:

re: askdrtodd
You beat me to it. I saw they had "Gelato" on the marquis last night, and was going to post it on this thread.
I was on my way back from Paci's Pizza. I have to say, again, I really think they have some of the best pizza in town. To stay on topic, they have gelato too.

I had gelato at Datz. I had coconut; it was not bad, not great. Not as intense flavor, though, as gelato should have. True, they did have a couple of unusual flavors. But my strongest memory of the place was the deafening noise level coming from the bar. We were able to sit outdoors. If we hadn't, my ears would have been bleeding. I'm not going back until they solve that problem.

Just to add some info re the original query...Daily Eats does serve Old Meeting House and the waitress said some flavors of another brand, which she could not remember.
Nola Cafe on Platt serves Old Meeting House. Served too warm.
City Street Sweets in Hyde Park Village serves Blue Bell.

tanya & matt's froyo is just getting ready to open in westchase where the old tcby's was in westchase at the publix plaza. they have drive thru, self serve froyo and all their homemade ice cream.
they shut down the store in the mall and this is going to be the new one specializing in froyo. there's a new decor that is pretty sweet. a lot of work is going into the new store. guitar hero for kids... all kinds of stuff.

definitely nothing wrong with java & cream on davis island. pretty affordable prices and every flavor comes from either tonya & matt's or working cow. the coconut flavor is excellent. runners-up: mocha almond fudge and mississippi mud pie

re: Mild Bill
Same over here. I could care less about this, but apparently Michael Pollan and others have bashed HD 5 as a marketing scam. Doesn't make one bit of difference to me. I think I would eat the mint if it had 1000 calories. Now to find ginger and lemon...

re: CFishman
I hit three today...
Albertson's on Waters & Dale Mabry, Publix at Hills. & Sheldon, and USave in T&C...
No Lemon, no Ginger...
I just enjoyed some Mint... My mouth is still cold...I saw the Ginger when I Googled so it's out there!
You know I buzz all around...
I'll keep my eyes open...-

re: Old E.
Bill, I think E (Old and Miss) are pulling our legs. I can find no trace of this ginger. Tonight was Fresh Market, Greenwise, Publix Britton Plaza, Publix on Nebraska, and Sweet Bay on Nebrasksa. Either the Eees are pulling a fast one are there are lurker gremlins who are eating up all the ginger. I am exasperated (but I still want the ginger).

re: CFishman
Mea culpa! I was at Greenwise myself today, and there's HD5 Mint where the Ginger used to be--major bummer! And I'm sorry I lead you on a wild-goose chase! I was thinking that since Greenwise used to stock the ginger (this I know), it might be worth asking the aisle manager to ask the distributor to bring more; there were barcode labels on the shelf for a couple of HD5 flavors that were also out of stock (though not ginger or lemon). I will ask for the ginger next time I'm there, so maybe we can build a movement...

re: Mild Bill
Old E, I take full responsibility for my foolish obsession. Which one of you texted me the picture? That was hilarious. It came right in the middle of class. I thought about excusing myself. I did a tour of Super Targets this evening, Lutz and there about. Mint, Coffee, Vanilla and Lemon but no ginger. I like the lemon quite a bit, interesting texture and lots of pulp/zest. I still need to get my hands on some of that ginger.

re: Mild Bill
Last summer I made a preserved lemon semifreddo with basil sauce. It was great. I think I am going to try some of that basil sauce over the HD5.

re: andy huse
Where do you think I'm getting my recipe from!?
Actually I just need a couple tips...
I've only tried ice cream a few times, mostly improvising, and it usually comes out grainy with small crystals...
Easy fix I know... I 've been meaning to investigate...I'm friends with the family and see them all the time...
This was from Christmas 09'...It was here that they had the most delicious pig cooked by Arco Iris...
That's my wife saying thank you to the piggy...
She had too much punch I think... ;-)

re: rhnault
I'll tell you where there is a single pint of HD ginger ice cream. But first, about my love of it...I was first exposed to the ginger flavor when visiting Santa Monica. I loved it. I love all ginger: fresh, candied, ginger snaps, ginger chews, ginger tea, you name it. Anyway, when I returned to my home in the Midwest, I discovered that there was no HD ginger ice cream anywhere in the state. (On the HD web site, you can enter the flavor you desire and your zip code, and they will tell you where there has been a recent delivery.) The closest cartons I could locate were in Dallas, about 4 hr away. So one weekend I drove to Dallas with a spoon, bought a carton from a Tom Thumb market, and sat in the parking lot and ate it all. To me, HD ginger ice cream had come to symbolize life in the big city, and all the good things it has to offer. So you can imagine how happy I was when I moved to Tampa to be able to get HD ginger at my neighborhood supermarket. Now, however, I fear it may become much more scarce, or even....ugh....unavailable. The HD website does not return any locations (in Tampa, Dallas, NYC, or LA) for recent deliveries. Let's hope it is just a glitch in the web site. But I noticed that Publix does not even have a slot on the shelf reserved for it anymore. Bad sign. Any way, today I was in the Albertson's at Dale Mabry and Waters. They had two pints. I left one for you guys. Enjoy.

re: DanRR
Dan,
Thanks for the heads up but it was too late. Less than an hour later, the ginger was gone. Now I will start my Albertsons tour. Should be fun. By the way, if anyone thought like I did that the store at International Mall might be a good source, it wasn't. They didn't have any HD5 flavors. I think we need to start an HD5 Ginger facebook group.

re: CFishman
It was actually my wife who went to Albertson's and, well, she tricked me. She came home with the HD5 Ginger and it was great. She said something like "It was very nice of that person to leave one container. I wouldn't have." Probably true. Thanks Dan for sharing it with us. I hope the next stop isn't Dallas.

re: CFishman
Love it!!
I got there shortly after your wife I imagine...I had this great Seinfeldesque fantasy in my head that we'd get there at the same time, see eachother in the parking lot, tunnelvision on eachothers eyes, then start running...
I brought a spoon and had my cell phone video ready just in case...
I know the manager Judy, and I left my number and asked her to order more... She promised...

the gelato place in International Mall (a strange name given the clientele of the place) has not met its demise.

If you are ever over here on the St. Pete side of the bay, make sure you try Paciugo's on Beach Dr. It is excellent. And if you go to their website, you can see the flavors of the day.

Whole Foods has gelato. They are bringing it in from a gelateria on the east coast of the state. It's excellent. Also, there is gelato at the restaurant at the Tampa Museum of Art. The restaurant is run by Mise en Place. I had an excellent sandwich there before the Global Lens film. During the film, I spilled my ice cream all over the new floor.

There is also Bo's ice cream in Tampa. It was good but not worth going out of the way for it. My fave is SunniBunni Frozen yogurt.
(Strachan's in Dunedin & Palm Harbor are great too as far as the Tampa Bay area )

You also have Marble Slab and Fresh Mouth over at Centro Ybor. The shakes at Fresh Mouth aren't bad at all.
Apparently, there's also a Dairy Queen in the UT student center as well, but not sure if its accessible to non-students.
Doesn't Davis Islands have a place?
