Gallo Blanco Cafe (PHX -- Clarendon Hotel)
[For some reason, the Chowhound moderators removed the thread about Gallo Blanco, but they were kind enough to send me an email with the text of my post in it, so I'm re-posting.]
The Clarendon is close to home for me, so I have tried every restaurant/bar incarnation they have had, always hoping that it will be a hit, but it has never happened until last night. Gallo Blanco is great!
My husband and I stopped in just for a drink to check the place out. After checking the menu, we decided we would order something small for dinner.
They have remodeled a bit so the restaurant and bar are a bit more open. Unfortunately, the lighting is still really, really dim -- so low that I needed to hold my menu up to the candle on the table to read it. But that was just about the only drawback. More importantly, the food was excellent, and inexpensive to boot.
We really weren't very hungry, so we did not get too far into the menu. I had the seasonal vegetable tacos, which were the best veggie tacos I have had anywhere. The small (4.5 in., or so) corn tortillas are made in-house and the mix of veggies was delicious, as were the tomatillo and red salsas that came on the side. And they were a whopping $2 each. My husband had the special, a carne asada torta with a fried egg, which he declared the best sandwich he's had in years. With one beer, our dinner bill was all of $18!
While we were eating the chef stopped by to talk to us. He said that about 70% of the food on the menu is locally-produced, which is one of the reasons the menu is pretty small.
As is usually the case in the Clarendon's restaurant, it was not very busy. So, hounds, please go to Gallo Blanco and support what could be a very good restaurant, so that I don't show up there in six months to find that another Clarendon restaurant has bitten the dust.
