Site Updates & Search Indexing Delay

We wanted to notify you that we released some changes to the site last night, and will release several more today and Monday.

Already released:
- Numerous fixes for performance and stability
- Removal of the ?tag=xxx;yyy from urls
- Numerous search relevancy fixes
- Advanced search for all content types (recipes, stories, etc)
- Photo galleries for recipes on tag pages, i.e. http://chow.com/tags/cheese/gallery
- "Related searches" contextual recommendations when user comes from search engines

** Please note: This release introduced a search indexing problem, for the next two days we will only be able to index search once per day. On Monday, we will return to indexing every 10 minutes. We are sorry for the interruption.

Today or Monday:
- Contextual recommendations of related threads, tags, stories, videos, recipes, etc on Chowhound topic pages
- Fix to the newly-broken quoted phrase search
- Restoration of the My Chow dropdown menu

Several additional search fixes, including topic title and username searches, 'or' search, and places search will be released over the next few weeks.

Please let us know if you encounter problems with any of the above.
Thanks.

    1. Thank you for the great news. Much appreciated. I'm SURE search performance comments will follow. ;-D>

        1. Just to test the new search I put "sausage gravy" in the search window, only because I knew I had recently added a thread in home cooking about that. The thread I added (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/609049) didn't show up, even when I went to the advanced search to narrow it down to the specific board. As a matter of fact the most recent thread was from back in January of '09.

On the other hand I really like all the options we now have in the search, and it is really great to have access to all the search pages, instead of just the first page like we had for awhile there. Thanks for all the improvements.

            1. A few updates:
              1. the contextual promotion unit on topics pages should go live today, May 5.
              2. Search indexing should return to it's 10 minute refresh tomorrow, May 6.

              Thank you for your patience.

                1. >>> Fixes to tag highlighting within content

                  I don't get any highlighting

I'm having trouble opening a post in a search list in a new tab or window. The option is no longer available when I right click on a link. This really makes search unusable. I have to leave the search list by clicking on the topic and then use my back button to get back to the search list. Since this isn't the proceedure for searches anywhere else on the web, I forget, close the window and have to redo my search

I'm on IE 8, but this happened on IE 7 too.

Ingredients are in the drop down menu, but no longer displayed on the main search page.

                    1. re: rworange

                      That is a weird bug.
It is only the links in the search results that don't have the "open in new tab" option.
All other links outside the search results still have the option. (IE8)

In Firefox the tab options are not affected. (FF3)

                        1. re: rworange

I find it really annoying that ever since the first search revamp, there is not a menu category for ingredients at the top of the search results (i.e., along with recipes, boards, etc). I'm still waiting for Chow to create a searchable index of the ingredient listings - that would be so handy. They've gone to the trouble of creating the ingredient entries, which are a great resource, so they really should be more accessible.

                            1. re: Caitlin McGrath

I agree - I wish there were a better way to access "Ingredients" - it is such a good resource, as you say.

                            2. Noticed you have improved the photo attachment feature by showing the name of the file that is attached to be uploaded. This is much better than it previously was (hidden and almost inscrutable). THANKS!
