Where to watch the Kentucky Derby?
I have some friends coming in this weekend who want to watch the Kentucky Derby. They want to drink mint juleps, but I'm guessing they don't want somewhere too fancy.
The only thing I'm coming up with is 45 Tchoup, because the guy bought the bar with Kentucky Derby winnings. But I don't even know if it will be open.
Any ideas?? Preferably not in the vicinity of Jazzfest.

The Columns, The Bombay Club (if open then), Cure (if open), Fat Harrys (but not sure about the Julep)...I would suggest Bar UnCommon in the Pere Marquette, but I dont think they open till 5. But if they are open and Chris McMillan is there, that is the spot.
Or shoot just make your own. Its not hard, and you can swing by any sno ball stand and get some large cups of shaved ice.

Someone who has been more recently that I have can tell you with more accuracy but the Ritz Bar has been renowned for its juleps (even though there is something odd like apricot added--no thanks). In years gone by I have gone to lunch in teh Quarter and just left my seat to go to a local bar for the few minute it takes for teh race and the OFFICIAL sign to go up. Used to do it at Clancy's occasionally. If you could finds someone with shaved ice--not crushed--you'd be a leg up.
I did a Derby in Baton Rouge a few times but I could not get the barrom to shut up so we could hear the calls. We also used to get Frank Davis at the WWL boot at teh Jazzfest to put it on the radio...that was lots of fun.
