Geneva report

My wife and I just had a chance to spend a lovely long weekend in Geneva. Loved our food options.

-- We stayed at Hotel Les Armures. This is the second time we've stayed at Les Armures and it was wonderful. FYI breakfast included, in a lovely room. Outstanding.
-- One lunch at La Diwane, Lebanese in Le Paquis. Delicious: Shwarma, felafel plate, cheese fritters.
-- One lunch at weekend small outdoor market near Place Molard. Rotisserie chicken with HUGE flavor, and a sweet crepe for dessert. Sitting outdoors in the sun watching the world go by. Sweet.
-- One dinner at La Favola, the famed Italian place. Excellent: gnocchi, asparagus and lobster "tarte," beef slices with carrots and reduction sauce; duck confit in a peas and carrots "sauce," tiramisu.
-- Another dinner at Les Armures. Just a wonderful and friendly place with outstanding food. Asparagus, rosti, fondue, macerated cherries, rhubarb tarte.
-- Hit of the trip: dinner at Chez Jacky. A wonderful, casual, friendly neighborhood place with truly outstanding food. Amuse of asparagus and lobster. starters: duck foie gras with quince; seasonal mushrooms. entrees: tastiest quail we've ever had; small plate of dorado cooked perfectly, beef medalliaons. great cheeses, and from the "dessert chariot(!)" mille feuille with fruit.
-----I'd gladly return to any of these places but will head first to Chez Jacky's, it was a true highlight of the trip.

    1. I went to Geneva for the day to see an old friend and we ate first at the Cafe du Centre where we've been many times before. We both had the daily special which was a rabbit in mustard sauce with cauliflower braised in some rich broth that was most tasty. The polenta, however, was rather sad. I chose a cheese platter whose unripe brie, OK goat and frigo cold gruyere did not please me, but the Irish coffee did. Our bill was 86.30 SF.

Our evening meal was at a place called Roberto also smack downtown. Everything looked great: we shared the octopus salad first which was OK, but not great. We decided to share two mains too: the veal liver with olive oil and herbs was OK but thin and nothing to write home about, coming with mixed veggies and potatoes. A real disappointment though was the frito misto which while the seafood ingredients were good, the batter and components were insufficiently cooked, served a pallid white. My friend picked up the bill, so I don't know what it was but it was pricey; starters were 15 SF and mains about 30 SF; wines were priced outa sight.

Go? Well, frankly, not to these two. That other funky place Colette and I went to a few years ago was better. Ah it's Chez Jacky, mentioned above.
