Mint Juleps

In honor of the derby - Where can one find the best mint julep? Location is not important. Being able to pack a few people into the bar to watch the race and have a good time is essential. Pewter cups are a big plus!

There's a bar on west 35th street, north side, between 5th and 6th, about middle of block, has an OTB parlor upstairs. Can't vouch for their mint juleps, but it should be the BEST place to watch the race. If you want to bet, I'd suggest Dunkirk.

Race is secondary to the booze.

        In that case:

        3 oz bourbon whiskey
        5-6 sprigs of mint
        1 tsp sugar
        Directions

1.Crush the sugar with four sprigs of mint in the bottom of the glass.
2.Fill the glass with crushed ice and then add the bourbon. Feel free to add more bourbon to fill the glass, if necessary.
        3.Garnish with remaining mint.
4.Insert a straw, cutting it to no more than 2 inches (5 cm) above the rim of the glass (allows one to smell the julep while drinking).
        5.Serve.

I'm aware of how to make a mint julep. Simple syrup works much better than just plain old sugar.

Are you referring to the Playwright?

Could be. Didn't notice the name when I went in, just been there once. Nice group of customers, not your usual OTB denizens.

The two best I've had were at Blue Smoke (no pewter cups) and Back Forty (pewter cups but no TV)
