Calling all BBQ connoisseurs...

Civil Bear Apr 29, 2009 04:07 PM

For those thinking about becoming certified BBQ judges, there will be a rare class held this July. It is $99 and includes a one-year membership to the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) along with lots of BBQ. Once you get your certification, you can judge at any KCBS around the country in addition to the several ones scheduled in NorCal this year:

May 16: Penn Valley (ICBA, not KCBS)
July 4: Stockton
August 15 & 16: Triple event in Fairfield
Sept 6: Clear Lake
Sept 26: Clovis

A comprehensive list of events acknowledged by the California BBQ Association (CBBQA) can be found at the following link:

Congratulations! Did you learn anything about barbecue that would be valuable to share? Also, how was the barbecue from Great american? It's been on my list for quite a while but I've never been there.

Yes Melanie, moi aussi. Mick, the cook had an overwhelming job producing chicken, pork, brisket and ribs in a limited time in various styles for illustrative purposes. That said I finished all my ribs, meaty &delicious. The chicken thighs were tasty but I got one end of breast that was dryish. The sliced pork was purposely overdone but I liked both pulled porks, One had more "bark" than the other. 2 of my brisket samples were tough but the third was juicy and tender. The team did a tremendous job with getting out the many boxes with sample garnish presentations. If you take the course watch out for the sneaking wisp of red leaf lettuce in the upper left corner. ;-)

I'm glad you guys were able to take advantage of the course, as it only comes around once every couple of years or so. Now, whenever we travel we check to see if there is a contest in the area to judge!

Can't believe I missed you! Were you in the morning or afternoon session? I did the afternoon.

Was this only for Saturday July 11th only??? I've always wanted to do this...but I was out of town in Austin, TX. What a bummer, but atleast I was eating at The Salt Lick while you all were learning.

I missed the initial post, shoot. I too was out of town on July 11th and missed it! I was in Kansas City and enjoyed Oklahoma Joes, Bryants, Gates, and Jack Stacks during the week I was there. Next time the class comes around, I hope to take it!

You can check the KCBS website for upcoming classes around the country. Some folks have been lucky enough to catch them on vacations or business trips...

Heheh, good on you. It is remarkable that the NorCal sessions on Saturday turned out 102 new CBJs whereas the class in SoCal only attracted 30 or so.

For those of you who asked to be informed about future classes, the next class in NorCal to become a certified BBQ judge will be in Sacramento on April 10, 2010. Here's the info.

This link mentions KCBS. Is that the radio station 740AM?
