Joel Robuchon @ The Mansion - moved from Los Angeles board
A few years ago I went to this restaurant and they didn't have my reservation (this has happened to me in Las Vegas three times - once here, once at Picasso, and once at Bouchon. )
It was hard to get into and you have to plan for a month or two in advance. And when I went it was full.
But whatta difference a little recession makes!
I decided last minute to go to Las Vegas for a convention last week. And with about four or five day notice, I called Joel Robuchon at the Mansion.
"What time would you like?"
"Could we do 8:30?"
"We could do 8:30."
"How about 8:00?"
"We could do 8:00 too."
But they've stepped up their game.
"Would you like a complimentary limo?"
And they sent a gold stretch. This takes you into a kind of secret entrance in The Mansion part of the MGM grand. If you don't know about it, it's an ultra-deluxe resort within a resort. You can't walk in via the casino. And you can't really call up and get a reservation there. 29 private villas ranging from 2,400 square feet to 12,000 square feet. Discrete. For serious high rollers. Invitation only.
The tasting menu varies, but I went with the 16 course one. And it was different from a few years back and every bit as impressive. You can find the list of courses and pics online. If you want haut, this is it. The biggest difference was the "bread cart" - I've seen some serious cheese trolleys in europe - sometimes a "two car" trolley. But the only bread cart I've seen here is at Guy Savoy. I love bread. And now there's a fab bread car at JR@TM - a lot of little rolls, and all manners. I could go for the bread. Just bread and butter.
And when you leave they give you a nice little color booklet with a pic of each of your 16 courses. And they also provide a terrific loaf of banana nut bread. Not a little loaf, but a pretty decent sized one. More than enough for a breakfast for two.
And a limo to return you back to your hotel of choice.
