Coco 500 vs. Bar Bambino
A few of us will be attending a graduate school formal at the W hotel this Saturday night starting at 10 p.m. Since I didn't get my act together fast enough, the only places that seem to have reservations that can get us in at a decent hour is either Coco 500 or Bar Bambino. Considering that there will be 8 of us, we will be in semiformal attire (suits not tuxes), and heading out to the W afterwards, which would you recommend? If not these two, any other recs?
You might phone TWO and ask them, 415.777.9779. They can probably handle you. It's just around the corner from the W.
I think you are going to be over-dressed at both but I don't think anybody will care. Coco500 draws a slightly more upscale crowd so you might fit in better there. On the other hand Coco500 is very noisy; you will definitely be able to hear each other better at Bar Bambino. The food is excellent at BB; it used to be equally good at Coco500 but they have had some chef changes so I don't know how good it is now.
Coco500 is a LOT closer to the W than Bar Bambino. I find Bar Bambino to be a bit cramped with so many people and it's probably a lot more casual than Coco500, considering its neighborhood. (However, I like the food at Bar Bambino more). Besides Coco500, have you tried Town Hall, Bacar, Jack Falstaff, or Zuppa? These restaurants are also close to W and offer suitable environments.

re: Melanie Wong
Hmm, overdressed is an issue. I went ahead and checked on reservations at both Coco500 and BB before posting this. At BB, if we dine there, we will have an entire 10 person table to ourselves (apparently they have 3 in the restaurant for large parties), so I'm thinking that might be less crowded.
Also, we don't necessarily need to be close to the W. I think we'd be willing to drive from dinner to W, just not too far. Having said that, any suggestions?
