Cream Soda

This is a very brief note, to say that Langer's has homemade cream soda, and it's very good. Less of the brutal all-out attack of sugar that most cream sodas are, and more just gently, ever-so-slightly-lushly, creamy.

The perfect complement to The World's Best Sandwich (tm).

I'm sure most of you Langerites already know this, but a few may not, because the menu is, well, less of a menu, and more of a Menuallapaloozafest. I keep looking around at the weird corners of the menu, expecting to find, like, sichuan chong quing chicken sandwich or something.

  1. I really like their Egg Cream.

    1. I like cream soda. Once I did a blind taste testing. I went out and bought all the bottled/canned brands of cream soda I could find, including about a dozen, many of which were regional and/or natural brands. The one I liked the best was IBC, the national brand sold in bottles in most supermarkets!

This is really interesting to me. The first time I went to Langer's I asked for Dr. Brown's Cream Soda. I was told they have Dr. Langer's cream soda and that it was great. I thought is was better than Dr, Brown;s but not great. Later my son's and I did a blind taste test and found Dr. Brown's and IBC to undrinkable when tasted next to Henry Weinhard's Vanilla Cream Soda, which was number one to us all.

Jeet, have you tried Virgil's? I'm not a cream soda guy, but their rootbeer is so creamy and delicious that I have to believe the cream soda is good too. They sell Virgil's at Albertson's. Also, to those looking for hard to find sodas of all kinds, I highly recommend the Sainsbury Market on Wilshire right on the border of SM and WLA. They have regional sodas from all over the country -- some of which I've never seen before. It's the perfect place to get supplies for a soda tasting.

This makes this third more interesting to me because it shows how we all have different taste. I tried Virgil’s and did not like it at all. I understand what people do like about it because it is a refined soda compared to others – it has style. A couple of my family members buy it several times a year to have something different from Weinhard's Vanilla and Orange Cream which they have for every BBQ.

Have you tried Sioux City Root Beer or Sarsaparilla? IMO, these are the best root beers but I did not like the Sioux City Cream Soda as much. Every time we want to have some fun doing a taste-test we stop at Galco’s and for five or six bottles of soda. Then while the smoker is burning logs we tease our taste buds. I have never been to Sainsbury but that will be on my list of things to do. Do you know whether they stock Sioux City sodas?

My brain just froze - somewhere in this town, I had a beautiful pull of homemade sasparilla... does this sound familiar to anybody?

Jeet, I love Sioux City but Virgil's is still king for my rootbeer taste. Sadly, Sainsbury doesn't stock Sioux City but they have other even more obscure brands, including one of my favorites from Boston, AJ Stephans. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.

Thi, that does sound familiar but I can't place it. I feel like someone mentioned this recently...

ETA: I just realized, I was thinking of your description of the cream soda at Langer's LOL!

      2. I will have to try the cream soda next time I'm at Langer's. Thanks!
