The Battery, Brighton

How is this place? It seems like a good fit for the area with all the irish bars.

  1. Mixed reviews at best. I find them pretty seriously gross, and won't be returning.

    1. I reviewed it in The Phoenix a while back. I like the fried haddock, but think the chips are weak. Other deep-fried stuff is pretty good. Decent post-session fare.

The battered sausage is worthy of a post drinking snack and took me back to the famous Snackbox of Galway, Ireland but the rest is really middle of the road to bad. I had such high hopes of having a proper chipper up the road from me.

On the other hand, I felt the chips were fine and never got the fish right. Instead of the battered sausage which was a bit better than the haddock or pollock, I simply prefer their sausage and chips dinner.

I agree the sausage and chip dinner is not bad at all, have the curry sauce on the side, and use lots of salt and vineger, real good size portion of chips

        2. Did this take over the site on which Athan's Pastry had a small Greek restaurant? I drove by yesterday and thought the Battery was on that location. If so, this is a double disappointment since Athan's had gotten good reviews, particularly for their lamb shank. I have long been meaning to try it.

No: two different spots. The second Athan's is about 100 yards down the block, and still going, last I looked.

          2. I agree with Barmy. Tried the fish chowder. After one bite, I threw it out. Batter on the fish and the onion rings are so thick it overshadows the food.

Too bad because the place is pleasant and the workers are nice but they won't see me there again.
