? Ramps & Fiddleheads in SE MI Markets
Are there any vendors at Royal Oak or Oakland County Farmer's Markets that will have ramps or fiddleheads available?
Or would Papa Joes or Whole Foods have these?
Or, if I want them, do I need to get them online (e.g. - Earthy delights)?
Thanks!

I found a MASSIVE patch of Ramps today East of Lansing. I would say there is enough for a few bushels. I am gonna go dig them out tomorrow morning. They were along the side of a park trail...all along both sides for at least 100 yards. If you have a good nose you will know when you are smack dab in the middle of them.

I bought Fiddleheads last year down at Eastern Market. Same guy sold morels, trumpets and more common shrooms. Ramps he had ran out of when I showed up.
Just ask for the shroom guy and someone should be able to point him out.

Well I made it out to Lansing to do some work for my Parents this weekend. I found a Patch of 16 whites. We may head out to Marion Springs today to hit a spot that a friend has very good luck with.
The ones I found look pretty small but I'll take em anyway. I kept them in the ground over night but no change in size.

Try Plum Market on the Corner of Maple and Inkster. This weekend while shopping there I saw that they had ramps in stock. There was also a sign for fiddleheads but they were out.

I would avoid Earthy delights. I have spoken to several chef's that have had similar experiences that I have had with them.
I have not seen ramps at Papa Joes or Whole foods. IIR there was some one selling them at the RO farmers market last year.
If you do require an on-line vendor for ramps I highly suggest some one reliable such as D'artagnon who has a stellar reputation. Their products and service are always top notch.
Does any one know if Otto's Chicken will be at the RO market this year?›15 Replies-

Did you make it down today? Wow was it packed. I stopped and started talking to Richard (Cuz Don) Hobson in the NW corner. He carries spring Lamb, popcorn, Maple syrup etc. We wound up jaw boning for quite a while. Look for Cuz Don next time you swing by and let him know Chef Dave sent you! ;)
BTW he has a book on his table called the "American Farmer" and he's featured in it along with over 20 other Michigan farmers.
I left with lamb chops and some lamb burger. YUM.
I did not see Ramps at RO or Rochester although I came home with a cooler full of Otto's chicken and some sushi from Noble fish.
It was a great day for shopping the local farm markets.-

I saw Morels at RO but they were sorry looking. I missed your other Post. I'm between Rochester/Romeo and I found another small patch of whites. It' still just a titch early in the woods where I go. I spoke to my Dad in Petoskey today. He says it's still been very cold at night up North.

re: Markcron
All I can tell you is Otto told me they would be there this Friday and the web site says they are open Fridays starting in May.
Hope that helps.
Here is the email I received from the market master;"You will find him (otto) at the South end of the market. He will have a stall indoors and the large truck will be just outside the big door. With the new lease period (begins May 1st) he has said he will be here every week.

re: Markcron
Just wanted to come back and update. The RO market is technically open on Friday but there's not much there. In spite of what both Otto and the market master indicated they were not there Friday May 15. If any one plans on trying the RO market on Friday I would wait until after Labor day and even then I'm not sure I would expect all the vendors to be there that are available on a Saturday.
