Mayur Kebab House?

KWynn Apr 27, 2009 11:21 AM

Has anyone been to Mayur Kebab House (http://www.mayurkababhouse.com/)? I drive by it all the time on the Circulator (K btw 11th and 12th) and it's walking distance from my condo, but it looks like a bit of a hole in the wall. So is it a great dive or not worth the visit?
In particular, I'm curious about their lunch buffet, as well as their delivery food (in particular, how is their Chicken Makhani, Lamb Saag, Vegetable Korma, and Eggplant Bharta?
Also the menu looks pretty standard Indian fare to me--what makes it Pakistani? If there's a Pakistani specialty I'd be curious to try it...

This is the place that reminds you of Germany from the outside? If so, yes, I've been there. I'm not an authority by any means on Indian or Pakistani food, but I really like it. If you just order a kebab at lunch, you end up with quite the plateful of delicious food - including something like 3 sides.

I used to work around the corner, and would stop in here about once a month, but all I've ever done was the lunch buffet.

Very cheap, especially for that area. It was definitely a shade different than standard Indian, though I can't explain exactly how. Note that their buffet is single-pass, not all-you-can-eat, but I've never been anything but stuffed after the one plate. Usually 2 meat dishes, 3 veggie dishes, plus rice and naan, and tandoori chicken on some days.

I've gotten lamb vinadaloo from Mayur. Not the hottest I've ever had but still pretty tasty.

It's a great workplace spot. And they used to be open late night, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there.

Seconded--solid and cheap, but not worth a special trip. They have a spicy version of tandoori chicken that's worth trying if it's on the buffet (I think on Mondays?).

I think it's 3 times/week that the tandoori chicken is on the buffet - Monday, Tuesday, Friday? Been a year since I worked there, so my memory is fading.

Agreed, not worth a special trip, but one of the better cheap lunches in the vicinity.

I too had often passed it, and finally tried it. Perfectly ordinary, and only worth it if you happen to be in the neighborhood.

It used to be that thursday and friday were tandoori chicken days, which makes the lunch buffet worth it. The chicken may taste a bit different because its halal. Okay food if nearby, not tripworthy.

It's probably been a year since I'd been previously, but I was there this past week and was pleasantly surprised that they had remodeled and expanded their buffet a bit to include dessert (gulab jamun that day) and an extra simmering tray or two. A bit better deal and atmosphere than it used to be, but still not particularly tripworthy.
