Gluten-Free brunch--is it possible?

We have a friend in town this weekend who has celiac disease. We were going to meet them for brunch, but I'm not sure where we should go. Brunch for me is all about the carbs! Any suggestions welcome. Cambridge would be best. Thanks!

    1. of course it's possible! choose a place that offers a good selection of egg dishes (frittata, scramble, omelet) so that your friend has more options than just basic scrambled eggs or yogurt with fruit..

        1. Agreed. Find a good place w/ plentiful egg dishes and you'll be fine. Soundbites in Somerville is really good. They do fried mashed potatoes on the side.

            1. Eggs, cheese, grits and some cured meat (bacon, ham, sausage) all all gluten-free....think Southern without the biscuits (if you have real Southern cornbread, there is no wheat flour in it, but I wouldn't trust the locals here without asking - btw, real Rhode Island jonnycakes are purely cornmeal, too).

                1. Homefries should be gluten free too. Actually, now that I think about it, if you leave the toast off, just about any omelet or egg platter should be fine.

                    1. If you decide on a place that does not offer a gluten-free menu, you should discuss with your friend his or her specific dietary restrictions. You might need to call ahead with the restaurant to ensure his or her needs can be met.

                        1. I don't know if there's a place to eat in, but the Basil Tree caterer in Medford Square has terrific gluten free food. I've been to several events that they've catered, and it's all very good.

                            1. Yes, all of the mentioned dishes will be gluten-free, but only if cooked on grills and pans that did not previously cook things with gluten. Most breakfast grills use the same area for pancakes, waffles, french toast as eggs, omelets, home fries - cross contamination! You need to ask for the gluten-free order to be prepared in a clean pan or grill.

                                1. What about dim sum? I know it would be Boston, but anything except the dumplings would work.

                                    1. re: galleygirl

the additional problem with dim sum is soy sauce (or sometimes fish sauce) which has gluten in it :(
