Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in the Midwest

The Himalyan last night - MSP

We went to the Himalyan last night before going to the Cedar Cultural Center for a concert.

I had forgotten how great it is. We had steamed momos and fried dumplings that were great.

I wanted something mild so I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala (sp) and it was memorable. My companion ordered a chicken curry.

And we had naan bread that was nicely charred on the edges. It seems to me that I have had some things like naan that were greasy at other places (or is that my imagination?) This was not. Very fresh and flavorful.

We were impressed with the flavorfulness (is that a word?) of the chicken. And the fresh vegetables in everything.

The service was very attentive, friendly and accommodating.

We were very happy. Don't forget this place -- it's a winner.

  1. That's always my reaction when I eat at the Himalayan - I'm surprised anew at how great it is! I've loved everything I've had there, and when I drag my friends, they say they love it, too.

Most of the food is "like" Indian dishes, but is somehow lighter and more delicately spiced. Yet it can be quite spicy, depending on the level of heat you order (we do medium, and Mr. Tastebud says it's plenty spicy).

I especially liked the chance to try yak - the yak momos are delicious!

Yes, we've had the yak there before on a prior visit and liked them. At that time, I think they were having the yak shipped in frozen from Nepal or thereabouts. But we've heard subsequently that there is a herd here in Minnesota (near St. Cloud?) that supplies them.

      Local and sustainable yak!

    2. Mmmmmm .. Just got takeout from there tonight! Yum! Kept in mind stuff people mentioned on this board and got yak momos, naan, tikka masala, and aaloo couli. Everything was seasoned just right, I was drooling the whole way home. I had a glass of Reisling with it and it complemented the heat nicely. The masala was rich without being cloying or anything. Ooh, and the momos were like pot stickers, but 10x better. Picked it up at 8:30 on a Thursday. There was only one table, so I hope they're doing alright through the dinner rush. Wouldn't want to loose such a great place like that.

Can't wait to go back. Also noticed they had some picnic tables outside in case people wanted to dine al fresco. Was tempted tonight.

Wow. They have wine on the menu now? I don't think they did just a bit ago when we were there. (Unless I overlooked it. But I'm not sure how possible that would be.)

From reading the post, it sounds as though daniellempls got take-out.

Hi karykat- yes I did get take-out, so I had a glass of my own wine, but I did see one their menu online- now serving wine and beer. Though I did not look at the wine list when I was actually there.

Yes, sounds like some wine is possible now either there or at home.

Your post is a good reminder to head back there.

        2. I've been meaning to try this place since I live nearby, but haven't had the chance to yet. This building seems to have a new restaurant every year or so. I hope this new place does well since hearing of the good reviews. I took the little ones to the Franklin Freeze the other night and was wanting to stop in there to grab a menu, but had to get the kids home so they could wash all the ice cream off themselves.
