Some suggestions for Member Recipes section

Not sure if this belongs on CHOW Feedback or on the Site Talk section, so please move as appropriate.

This morning, there are probably 30 "recipes" posted by Spammers. Pure linkage hit posts, and I've reported them as you've asked using the REPORT button.

I know it's difficult to deal with these bozos, but is there a way to block multiple Chowhound User Names being created from the same IP address? That seems to be what they're doing and then posting spam in rapid-fire manner to fill up the Member Recipes site with their crap.

Another suggestion - is there any way for ***that section on CH only*** to disallow rapid-fire posts from being created by the same User name? For instance, maybe only allow one "recipe" every 10 minutes? Yeah, it screws it up for the rest of us, but if you're only allowed to post 1 recipe every 10 minutes, it might dissuade some of the spammers from coming here and dropping multiple spams on the board.

Just some thoughts this Sunday morning...

    1. I'm new to the chow hound site and was also miffed at all the spam on the site. I clicked on a couple of what I thot was legit recipes only to be misled.. It takes away from the enjoyment of t he site.

        1. I'm with Linda; we've discussed this before. Somehow, it dilutes the authenticity of the website - those Spammers don't get through on epicurious, Saveur, or finecooking or any other website that I frequent. It aggravates me so much that I don't look for recipes here at all. Surely there's a way to stop them? I hope so. I come here for the company of other chowhounds, not the recipes (except the posted ones on the threads).

            1. Good ideas--esp. the time limit on recipes. I'm willing to bet most of us who are posting actual recipes aren't doing it rapid-fire, one after the other. I only have three recipes up there, anyway. Whatever the team can do to help limit the spammers would be terrific!

                1. There's lots of work being done on dissuading the spammers and making it easier for us to remove them, but unfortunately, there are more of them than there are of us, and they're very creative. We've gone through a few iterations that seem to shut them down for awhile, and they come back with some new technique.

We do have to be careful not to block out other people by accident -- for example allowing only one registration per IP would mean we'd be limiting registrations to one per large company, and also blocking out most AOL users.

OK, I understand the IP address issue. But what about disallowing rapid-fire postings on that board? If they can't drop 10-15 posts in 10 minutes, that might chase some of them away.

I don't want to go into any detail on what we are or aren't doing and why or why not, because there's a reasonably good chance that the spammers are aware of these conversations -- they're not just bots, apparently. I don't want to post information that tells them how best to get around the defenses we do have in place.

Fair enough. I hope that my suggestion is taken into consideration, if at all possible. Perhaps it will help; perhaps not. But can't hurt to try.
