Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

Reccos for lunch in Hayward tomorrow?

Looking for something cheap & delicious that I can't necessarily get in Oakland, or even a different style/dishes than I can get here. I am meeting a friend coming from 1/2 Moon Bay, so the place shouldn't be too far off from SMB & 880. Prefer something adventurous, inside(I think it may rain) & spicy/highly spiced. Anything SE Asian is right in the zone as is, Indian, Mid-Eastern, etc. I am totally open to suggestion. I don't think I have eaten in Hayward except maybe a funny/decent sit down Mexican place on Mission.
Thanks!

  1. The Vulcan Thai Cafe is a family run hidden gem. I particularly like the stir fried broad rice noodles and the pumpkin curry. Get there early or late because it gets crowded (especially on Fridays!) and the parking lot is tiny. You might call to make a reservation. This is not downtown Hayward, but in an industrial neighborhood. The restaurant is squeezed between other businesses. Enjoy!

I'm a cartographer so I had to speak up when I saw that you said that this Oakland location was "just next to Hayward."

I just ran it in Google maps and this cafe is over 13 miles (15 minutes) from Downtown Hayward.

    2. Is this place still open?
This is in Hayward. Jamejip. A small authentic Korean Restaurant which is famous for goat stew. I really liked the Squid Noodle(o-jing-uh Kal-gook-su, spicy). Small side dishes were tasty. Agu-jjim (Spicy mong fish with bean sprouts)was dissapointing. The portion was small.
      Stir fried soondae was good.

      1. I had two lunches in Hayward a couple weeks ago and posted on both. Loved the Fijian-Indian thali at Curry Corner, and then not spicy, the lunch special at Taste of Manila. Curry Corner only has 5 seats.

Thannks Melanie. I was hoping for more options as a five seater could be tough getting in & I just got back from the Philippines :)

Turnover is fast food style, so you'd get seated quickly. And, the proprietress might even tell some guy to get up so you could sit down. . . but you would be taking a chance on being able to sit down if it's wet.

Years since I was there, but I have fond memories of the quenelles at A Street Cafe. It's not as close to the bridge for your friend. Old school "Continental" French food, it used to have lunch specials.

        2. What about the Jewish-style deli, City Bistro? My friend really loved it.
