Madison Asian with Family

I am in Madison, satying at the Holiday Inn at the American Center (W Terrace Drive), but when my husband and 4-year-old daughter join me tomorrow will be mobile with car. Looking for a spot for dinner, Asian food is the favorite for us. The 4-year-old is adventurous, so I mention her only to request a place that is OK with kids. I love Thai but can go with anything as long as there are solidly spicy choices, especially noodles.
I know that I could troll the boards, but I am sitting in a miserable business center in the lobby and would really appreciate some guidance, especially since I am utterly unfamiliar with Madison.
Thanks in advance!

  1. madison has some really good chow and there are many posts here on that subject. unfortunately there are very few asian restaurants except for some strange ones that pop up on state street from time to time. i have not found a good one in the past 10 years or so of regular visits. you are going to have to drive to chicago for some really good asian. sorry to be so negative but that is the reality. try some of the places that use the local dane county bounty. not asian but places like harvest, lombardino's, and the old fashioned will feed you very well.

Gosh, I have to disagree with you, biga290. While I do find Madison to have a great lack of Chinese options (yes, I have been known to drive the six hours to Chicago and back for some dumplings and Szechwan take-out), I think that Madison does have some solid choices in the all-emcompassing Asian category. The standout, to me, is the Laotian restaurant Lao Laan-Xang, which is a solid A minus in my book. Two locations, with slightly different menus. The location on Atwood would be your best bet with a four-year old, as the location on Willy St. is pretty small and cramped. Bandung is solid Indonesian, and I would recommend Swagat or Maharani for good Indian. Have fun!

How about Wah Kee for Chinese food? I haven't been here for years, but used to love stopping here whenever I went through Madison. That was back when Minneapolis didn't have many good noodle-soup restaurants; I had many a tasty bowl of soup here.

    2. I'll second Lombardino's.

But in answer to the question asked, you're just across the interstate from Imperial Garden. Voted #1 Chinese in Madison for the last bazillion years. I'm no expert on Asian, but I love their Governor's Chicken ordered extra spicy.

Out American Center, driving into Madison. Under the interstate. Third (I think third) stoplight, take a right at the BP station. Imperial Garden is on the frontage road right there.

Might not be exactly what you're seeking, but it's close should you wind up pressed for time.

Happy chowing in our fair city!
