Neptune Oyster or Craigie on Main

coming to Boston this weekend with my old college roommate, leaving the wives at home, to catch saturday's ball game (me-->sox; him-->yanks)

we are arriving friday afternoon, planning a couple of nites of good food and good drink.(no clubs, we're in 40's now)

Its been 7 years since i've lived in town and havent tried either spot, but have read good up here on the boards...

what do you recommend of these two for Friday nite
Saturday we have reservations at Eastern Standard. (unless persuaded somewhere else otherwise)

also, there used to be a place in the North End that served anchovy stuffed fried olives along with a martini, if i remember it was on hanover...is that place still there? and what was the name?

thanks in advance
sb

All 3 are worth going to.

What about dinner at Craigie Fri night.

Sat lunch at Neptune and Eastern Standard for dinner; after the game?

In the words of French waiters everywhere " Excellent Choice"

I believe "Excellent Choice", translated from waiter-ese, means, "You ordered something." But that sure is a good-looking Boston restaurant itinerary. (Just don't expect much of the food at Drink.)

Yup, really solid itinerary you have there. Thumbs up for sure! And mcslimjb is right, the food at Drink is not great, just go for the cocktails.

Three of my favorite restaurants. Great idea, 9Lives!

Also, re: stuffed olives on Hanover Street. That was Bricco back when Chef Bill Bradley was in the kitchen. Bricco is still there, but since renovated with a different chef/menu. I loved his fried anchovy-stuffed olives too. He also served them when Rustic Kitchen first opened in Quincy Market and he was cooking there.

He's no longer in Boston, the last I heard, he was at Incontro in Franklin, but I haven't been.

Updating this - as mentioned in another topic (link below), Bill Bradley is back in Boston and now at Pazzo on Newbury Street.

If you haven't been here for awhile, I'd recommend going down to the South End for dinner and drinks. It has lots of places to have good drinks and there are a few excellent, casual restaurants. There is a lot of people and activity on a weekend night - a bit older than the usual college crowds. My usual suggestions are B&G Oyster (they serve other seafood as well) and/or the Butcher Shop for great meat. Both places are small, unique and serve great food (I prefer B&G over Neptune). The area is also in walking distance to the Back Bay.

Although I haven't been there, the place to drink seems to be Drink - a short ride by taxi.

Skip Eastern Standard - hit up Neptune on one night and Craigie on the other.

Hmmm I don't know...depends what the OP is looking for. I definitely agree with the Neptune rec....Eastern Standard could be fun though --right near the game, lots going on, a really energetic, fun vibe, with great drinks and pretty good food.. Craigie is going to have much more of a focus on the food and the dining experience; that's a good thing, but might not be what two guys out "on the town" are looking for. Certainly a worthy suggestion though.

We defineitly appreciate great food and great dining experience as you say Craigie will promise, but yes its gonna be a more out on the town, lets find some great cocktails before/during/after dinner as well kind of weekend...(mind you not a drunk-beer fest reminiscent of our college days, for sure!)
Craigie may fit, not sure...thats why i came here!

chose E.S for its classic cocktails, would like to find some more places like that as well. I see Craigie has a great bar list too, though??)

Craigie's cocktails are out of this world. Classic style, craft cocktails. I just went there two weekends ago and everything was amazing. Very similar classic cocktails like ES. If you want a bar to hit up, just for classic cocktails, try Drink. All of these places I have reviewed somewhere on Chow and in my blog. Have fun!
