What kind of beer would you serve with a traditional veal osso bucco. I haven't decided if I will serve the veal shanks with rissoto Milanese or cheese polenta.

I'd go with a Trappist or Abbey style ale- something like Chimay or Ommegang- assertive enough with some fruity/spicy/vinous characteristics.

That's a tough pairing, IMO. If you are lucky enough to find it, I'd suggest Russian River's Consecration. It's a sour Belgian brown ale aged with currants in cabernet barrels. I think the sourness would handle the tomatoes well, and the vinous notes would complement the wine flavors in the dish. If you can't find that, you might consider something like La Roja from Jolly Pumpkin, which is a sour barrel-aged red ale.

Personally, I'd stay away from Abbey-style beers with that menu - osso buco has some delicate flavors, and the assertive fruity esters and strong alcohol flavors of abbey ales would run roughshod over them, IMO.
