Australian (non Foster's) beer

frankthetank Apr 21, 2009 09:40 AM

Yesterday a friend of mine was sworn in as an Australian citizen at their embassy in D.C. She currently lives here in Boston, and we are getting a few friends together to celebrate the occasion. That said any hounds in the Boston area where you can get a descent Australian beer? Hoping to find some Crownies or Victoria Bitters if at all possible. Thanks.

Isn't the Coopers Brewery Australian? I see those bottles in many liquor stores in Boston. And it looks like a non-lawnmower beer, to borrow a phrase.

Yeah, Coopers' beers are Australian and they have flavor -- albeit of a slightly funky (not necessarily a bad thing) sort. Their stout and Vintage Ale are my favorites in their range. I, too, have have seen the Coopers beers in several Boston-area stores.

The Malt Shovel ("James Squire") beers are probably my favorite from Australia, but -- off the top of my head -- I haven't seen 'em around Boston.

BTW, I've done a few stints "Down Under" and met more than one or two Aussies who vociferously announced their rejection of Foster's and preference for "Victoria Bitter" (which, IIRC, is actually a lager). "VB," they would insist, is what "real Australians" drink. I would urge all curious parties to try Foster's and Victoria Bitter side by side. There's scarcely any difference between them.

VB, the best. Funny down under Fosters is a joke. May want to try Kappy's. Yumm....stubbies!

Can someone please advise where I can find Coopers in Boston? Its the local brew of my old city.. Adelaide. Aussies pretty much drink their local brew: Banana Benders (Queenslanders) have ther XXXX, Crow Eaters (South Australia) has Coopers, etc.

I'm meeting 2 old mates from Adelaide in Boston over the weekend and we'd be so happy to have a Coopers as we reminisce about life under the sun!

Not sure if it's convenient for you, but I picked some up recently at the Spirited Gourmet in Belmont. You might want to give them a call first.
