Shichirin/konro: Where to Buy?

Ideally I'm looking for a ceramic cylindrical variety about 25cm diameter and 17cm tall; good for 2-3 people.

I've seen them at Korin but can anyone suggest other places?

    1. I think I have seen it at Mitsuwa. It doesn't look exactly the same but it works the same way. You can also try calling Sunrise Mart or Katagiri and see if they carry it at their home appliance department

They don't have any at the Sunrise however I picked up a copy of ChopsticksNY while I was there and came across information about a new place called the Japanese Culinary Center which just opened in NYC on 4/15/09, and they have some as listed on their website nymtc.com. They also have several charcoals listed.

It dosn't seem like they have the size I want but I'm going to check tomorrow. It's likely they don't have their whole inventory on their website.

For anyone that's interested I found some small ones at a restaurant supply store on the bowery that specializes in japanese goods. I also found some at the JCC which were naturally expensive and not unlike the stuff found elsewhere.

                  I finally tracked down a shichirin at www.marukaiestore.com for 23$, 10.6"x10.6"
I found pictures someone had taken at one of their retail stores but they didn't have them listed online; I had to contact them via email. they were very responsive and helpful, even creating 2 new product listings on their website the same day.

They also have a good price on their binchotan at >6$/1.25lbs which is almost 3 times cheaper than the cheapest korin stuff.

the shipping price was negligible for the charcoal but on the shichirin it was about 23$ to brooklyn. hopefully it dosnt arrive cracked!

              • So my shichirin came from www.marukaiestore.com shipped from california, it was packed very well and nothing was broken. I havnn't cooked with it yet but I am pleased with the quality and feel of it.
