Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

40th birthday party for a fun hip chick....private room needed!

I've searched the archives but still need help!

Here are the specs:
40 people
Sat nite in August/Sept
Budget is $65 per head, more if that price includes food....ie, one place gave us $65 a head for the room/bar and then we can separately buy trays of food.

it's big drinking crowd, used to good food but not super gourmet...good tasting, basic stuff, tapas is good!

a hip, dowtown atmosphere would be ideal.

Thanks in advance for any help!

    1. Sala on Bowery has a private room downstairs and several options of open bar+tapas from $60 on up.

En has private rooms but not sure if big enough for 40 people. Tribeca Grill has private rooms. Tribeca Cinema ( film festival HQ) has prvate room with bar all sorts of menus of your choice not sure if 40 people will be enough , but worth a call

I was very disappointed with En's food. I wouldn't recommend it, personally.

I had a private party at Tribeca Grill a couple years back and while the food was not the best, it was certainly good enough for the occasion and the manager (Meghan?) was a total pleasure to deal with. I'd have another gathering there in a heartbeat.

            2. Just hosted 25 people at Jane on Houston. www.janerestaurant.com. They have several food options - one where you get table apps plus an app, entree and dessert for $55 ex tax and tip. They give you a menu to choose from beforehand and you'll need to pick three choices for each course that your guests can select that evening. Then they have bar options for as low as $30 a head for 3 hours. The private room is downstairs - check it out. The did a very nice job on food and service. Nice menu choices too. We did the $55 dinner plus the $40 bar option (higher end) and it ended up being $122 per person.

                1. L'Artusi's private room would work, plus they have a prix-fixe "large group" menu for $65/person.

                    1. Try the private room at Mercat in Noho. It will fit your budget, really good tapas, great wine choices, very trendy, sophisticated, fun but not cheesy vibe.
