Pepsi w/o HFCS in Baltimore

bmorecupcake Apr 20, 2009 06:11 PM

According to Serious Eats, we should be seeing sugar Pepsi in stores starting today. Any sightings in or around Baltimore? (Specifically, in the Catonsville area.)

While I'm not a fan of Pepsi, I suspect that your local Latin market should have a selection of sugar-based sodas - including Pepsi.

I used to get those when the ingredients only read "sugar", but now the all Latin market Pepsi's read "sugar and/or high fructose corn syrup".

I don't drink soda...but is Sugar Pepsi kind of like a Jolt Cola??

Pepsi is test-marketing a version that is made with pure cane sugar, as opposed to high-fructose corn syrup. Similar to what Coke does at Passover-time in Jewish-heavy markets, or the Mexican Coke products that onocoffee referred to.

DC/Baltimore is one of the test markets. It will probably be widely available once they get into the distribution channel.

I found single 20-oz bottles of Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback at the Walmart in Eldersburg on Sunday for $1 each. I haven't seen them in Howard County yet nor have I seen them in the 12-pack cans, which should have a 1-year shelf life. I tried one of the Mountain Dews this morning and it is very good, crisp, clean, not cloying. I've read this will be a LTO for the next two months and not a permanent line extension.

I bought pepsi throwback today at a food lion in pasadena... if I can get it there that should mean its everywhere now. I like it a lot.

Still not at my local Superfresh, Giant, or Wal-Mart. Oh well, looks like I'll have to drive a bit to get it.

I bought a 2L bottle of pepsi for my daughter and she said it taste like diet. I checked the bottle and it only had sugar added . The next 2l bottle she bought had both HFCS and sugar added. The only difference in the bottles was one had a white cap and the other blue. Minor diff. in the carbs and sugar.

Just found it at the Safeway on St. John's Lane in Ellicott City...not so far from Catonsville. Thanks for the heads up on this....I would probably never have noticed it otherwise!

Thank you so much for sharing. They must've just got it in. I was just at that Safeway (and the other EC Safeway, as well as Giant and Superfresh in EC) three days ago and no one had it.

I was able to pick some up from Target in White Marsh.

I know that doesn't do much your Catonsville request though...

That works, actually. We have family in White Marsh and they drive down every weekday to Catonsville for work.

Seems like everyone is running out quick, or had very little to begin with. The St Johns Ln Safeway was out by the time I got there, but they are expecting more any day now.

Even though all managers at Giant stores told me they never heard of it, some employees stocking shelves said they had it, but ran out. I made certain they understood I was asking about Pepsi and not Coke. Giant's Consumer Affairs hotline says they only carry non-HFCS Coke, not Pepsi. Very unimpressed with their customer service.

Just bought two 12-packs last night at the St John's Lane Safeway. Thank again.

Now that that's done with, has anyone spotted Mountain Dew Throwback somewhere around Ellicott City?

The Target at Long Gate has both the Pepsi and Mt. Dew Throwback. At least they did Monday.

Is this Pepsi the same as Pepsi Natural? We are DC hounds visiting LA and we picked up a case of Pepsi Natural at the local Cosco. Contains sugar, and only sugar, as the sweetener. Is this available in the DC area?

I just called Pepsi at 800-433-2652 and was informed that Pepsi Natural and Pepsi Throwback are two completely different products with completely different recipes. Throwback is just regular Pepsi with sugar instead of HFCS. Natural is something else altogether. The nice customer service lady even read me the ingredients of the two. :)

is the taste worth the drive? I love Pepsi, but it is not the best drink for my diet.

I just had to be patient. They are everywhere now. Both Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback. My local Superfresh, Giant, Rite Aid, even the gas station has 'em!

Try CVS - I've seen the Pepsi and Dew Throwback at CVS stores all over the DC area, but NOT at Giant or other grocery stores.

Yes, I am in Baltimore. They are still available at most grocery stores, but I find convenience stores and gas stations are not refilling their inventory. You can also find them in the DC area in RiteAid stores. Pepsi and Mountain Dew Throwback bottles are 99 cents at RiteAid right now.

I got mine at Target in Columbia MD. I LOVE IT SO MUCH. It tastes WAY better. If only pepsi would do it permanent, instead of an 8 week run. it leaves no horrible aftertaste. no syrup phlegm, no teeth grittiness. It just goes down smooth and is actually refreshing.

My local SuperFresh (Security Blvd, next to the mall) is again carrying Mountain Dew and Pepsi throwback. This time the cans and bottles also have retro labeling. At the cash register on the way out I spotted a plastic bottle of "Heritage Dr Pepper" with sugar! I didn't see cans of Heritage Dr Pepper, but I wasn't really looking out for it when I was in the soda aisle.

The labeling on the plastic bottle is like the one on the can here: http://www.bevreview.com/2009/12/14/c...

I hope they change the recipe for the Throwback Dew from last year. The Pepsi was great, but the Dew was terrible.

I got a 12 pack of Throwback Pepsi at the Falls Church Target on sale, no less, for $3.
