Plugra Butter Blues

I'm still mourning the loss of my Plugra butter at Trader Joe's. It was only $3.29/pound which is super-cheap.

Does anyone know where else I can purchase the 1 lb., unsalted bars in the red wax paper at a good price?

I bake a lot and go through TONS of the stuff.

Thanks for your help!

Smart and final does not stock it, however they will order it for you.

Plugra was the main reason I went to TJs, and while there I spent a couple hundred dollars on other stuff!

Thanks for the link, I did register my sadness with TJs. So sad. So very sad.

                  I Found Cheap Plugra!!!
Thanks for everyone's help in trying to find Plugra Butter at a good price since Trader Joe's stopped carrying it.

I'm happy to report that my Baking instructor found a great source.

Smart and Final on Venice Blvd. in Culver City/Los Angeles carries the UNSALTED, 1-pound, red-wrapped, food service bars for only $2.79.

Most Smart and Final's do not carry it, so make sure you go to this one, or call your local store before you go in.

They had carried that butter for like 10 years before discontinuing it so I don't know why they all of a sudden dropped it. It was very cheap and very good for the price, not to mention it was fantastic for baking with. I hope that they bring it back.

A very wonderful alterantive, also found at Whole Foods (Wilshire right near Douglas Park location), is Mayenberg Goat Butter. SIlver package. Quite wonderful, almost like a cross between an extremely mild cheese and butter (I first had it at Cyrus in Healdsburg). Delicious

I love that butter, probably got it at Whole Foods but haven't been lately. That was possibly the best butter I ever had. Or maybe I got it at Wild by Nature?

I have bought goat butter (though not recently) from Soledad Goats at the Irvine FM. It was absolutely amazing, but quite expensive.

I should check my local goat farm, they're expensive too, but I'm worth it!

Just tried this and must agree. Love their goat milk also, either in whole or lowfat but preferably whole.

I too bake a lot and was using Plugra, until TJ's brought the Kerrygold Irish butter. Which I find superior to Plugra for baking, and it also tastes better IMHO when I make tartines with radishes. And when I'm flush I buy French butter at Surfas.

I've tried Surfas and Smart & Final and neither one have Plugra. Surfas is trying to get it.

Problem is, Whole Foods charges for 8 oz of Plugra more than Smart & Final charged for a pound!

If you send a letter to the corporate office you just may see the product return, quite often suddenly. This has happened to me a few times in the past few years. They dont know you are unhappy if you don't tell them.

I too was bummed out to see Plugra had disappeared from the store shelves. Here's the reply I got from TJ's on this matter:

Thanks for contacting us. We have discontinued that product in our stores due to slow sales. Because our stores have such limited space, if an item does not meet a minimum sales volume, we will discontinue it in order to bring in something we think will sell better. I will pass your comments on to our buyers for consideration. From time to time, if there is enough outcry to bring back a discontinued item and we are able to do
so, we will give it another run.

Cabot is making an 83% butter that is supposed to be the same. Just came out, so don't know everywhere it is yet.
