Shipping Wine Internationally to the US - rules?

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I've scoured the boards for a bit and haven't come across anything yet.

I would like to ship wine from New Zealand to the US, to both Minnesota and New York. Is this legal? How is best to go about such things? What are my limits? What is the best way to package?

I know, flying into LA, I was previously only allowed 1 bottle, but I am not sure if that was a State rule or Federal. While I am on the topic, what about Vodka? I know a New Zealander in the states who would delight in receiving a bottle of 42 Below of & Vodka.

Cheers!

B

    By "shipping" do you mean
    a) bringing with you in your baggage, or
    b) thru a carrier ( FedEx, postal service or some such )?

    a) has some allowance, you can probably check on-line.
    b) is a big no-no. You need an alcohol import license.

Basically type of alcohol makes no difference to a) & b).

Ric, if I find a wine in France I really like, at a price I like, is there any way to have a "middle man" arrange shipping and take care of the import regulations. If there is, how do I find this middle man?

You're looking for a wine importer willing to do the import for you.
Makes sense, as long as you are bringing full cases, no single bottles.
Send me an email for more info.
