R.I.P Lady Stella
I've given up.
I run to the cookie aisle whenever I'm in the store..hopeful....hopeful... (Sigh)
They must not be making them anymore. I read they were on strike, but the stores always have the S cookies, Anisette Toasts, and sometimes the stupid fudge ones that piss me off because the package is so small I can rip it open as I leave the cookie aisle and be finished before my shopping cart wheels make a full revolution.
Lady Stella was my favorite. I used to buy her in 2's. Maybe it's my fault? Did I eat the last box? I haven't wanted to talk about it. I am so sad... So long Lady S...
I need a new cookie. And a hug.
The quality of Stella D'Oro products has slipped significantly, wouldn't many agree? The Lady Stellas were never a favorite of mine, and that huge box they came in just made matters worse because they took forever to consume. I like the Regina cookies, and the Roman Egg biscuits if done right. Look --> http://www.stelladoro.com/cookies.html
Good to know that I am not the only one disturbed by the disappearance of this cookie variety by SD. It is one of my few indulgences of "junk food " cookies and I do consider these junk food worth eating if you are so inclined to eat junk food.
I loved the variety of the foods in each package especially those shortbread cookies with those multicolored sprinkles on top. Also loved the cookies with the colorful icing, and those white/chocolate blended cookies. Also the half moon shaped cookies. I am embarassed to say that often times, one package would not last for more than one sitting. I rarely ate them with milk, tea, or coffee, although they would have tasted even better that way.
Then one day, there were no more on the shelf. I thought it was just one store that didn't carry them. I went to many different ones and all I saw were the other varieties of Stell D'Oro cookies. I thought maybe they were taken off the shelf because of some ingredient that had a recall, but it seems like the company is just not making them anymore. Why? I don't think they sold any less than some of their other products.
These cookies tasted rich, and enjoyable to indulge in. I hope they return to the shelf. I' will buy at least three packages of them.
I've seen them here in Southern California. When was the last time you found them? I will check my stores and verify their existence and report back. I saw them at a little Italian deli and at two small supermarket chains around election day. I know how you feel, I get panicky when I don't see my chocolate mint cookies at the 99.99 Cents only store.
re: Kate is always hungry
Katie I'm in a small town in Central FL- but I have family in Burbank. I am emailing my Aunt- thanks!! I last saw them maybe around Halloween last year? I can't remember!! I keep meaning to speak to the manager @ my store to see if he can order the Lady Stellas.
Lady Stella is the only kind of Stella D'Oro I want. I saw that one store is down to just a few packs of the S cookies, they put them on the top shelf and no tag! That's not good... maybe they have given up ordering any of them anymore!
re: Boccone Dolce
Too weird! I walked into a store down the street from the Italian deli that had them last year on a whim after lunch today. They were there! They had two or three boxes. The store is Super Sal. The address is 17630 Ventura Blvd., Encino. 818-906-2815. I asked the price, $3.69. The store down the street, Domingo's Italian has them for $4.99. I think the Italian place charges sales tax on them because they are "fancy" cookies!?!
Oh man. That is some sad news. I grew up eating and loving the Anisette Toasts too, but they've not been available where I've lived for the past couple of decades.
Hearing they no longer exist is sort of like hearing that one of my favorite city blocks, in a place I left years ago, has disappeared and I've missed my chance to revisit.
